USB receiver or Bluetooth for a wireless mouse and keyboard: what each one actually requires
Buying a wireless mouse or keyboard means choosing a connection before choosing a shape: a bundled USB receiver, a direct Bluetooth connection, or a cable. The trade-off is usually presented as "a dongle uses a port, Bluetooth does not", but the manufacturers publish sharper differences than that. Logitech states that its Logi Bolt devices run at Bluetooth Security Mode 1, Security Level 4 - Secure Connections Only - when paired to a Logi Bolt receiver, while the same mouse in a direct Bluetooth connection uses Level 2 'just works' pairing and a keyboard Level 3 with a six-digit passkey. It also states that up to six Logi Bolt devices can share one receiver (with its Options+ app), that Logi Bolt products cannot be paired with other Logitech receivers and vice versa, and that its 10 metre range and "up to 8x lower latency" figures come from its own controlled test, whose conditions it prints. A Razer gaming dongle sits at the other extreme: it is designed exclusively for mice and does not support multiple devices. This guide turns those published statements into a decision, and covers the practical failure modes - a lost receiver, a PC with no Bluetooth, and interference from USB 3.0 devices.

1. Three routes, and what each one demands from the PC
A bundled receiver asks for a USB port and almost nothing else. Logitech states that Logi Bolt products "are pre-paired to their Logi Bolt USB receivers in the factory, so setup is truly a plug-and-play experience", and that receivers are "available in two connectivity types: Type A and Type C", with USB adapters offered as well. Nothing has to be discovered, paired or trusted the first time, which is why this is still the route corporate deployments prefer.
A direct Bluetooth connection asks the opposite: no port, but a working Bluetooth radio in the PC and a version high enough. Logitech states that its "Logi Bolt wireless devices are Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0 or higher" and that "from a backward compatibility standpoint, Logi Bolt wireless devices are able to communicate with Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 hosts or higher when in direct Bluetooth connection". Microsoft publishes how to read your own machine's ceiling: the LMP number in Device Manager, where LMP 6 is Bluetooth 4.0 and LMP 13 is 5.4, with the note that the LMP version is the highest core specification the device fully supports and that higher-specification accessories "might still work, but with reduced functionality".
A cable asks for a port and gives up mobility, and it removes the radio questions entirely - no pairing, no battery, no interference. One thing worth noticing about the Logi Bolt design: it is built on Bluetooth but deliberately closed. Logitech writes that "though Logi Bolt is based on Bluetooth, it is an end-to-end closed system where a Logi Bolt receiver is emitting an encrypted signal that only connects with Logi Bolt products. So the Logi Bolt USB receiver can't be paired with any non-Logi Bolt device." It presents this as the answer for workplaces whose policy does not permit Bluetooth connections - which also means the receiver is not a general-purpose Bluetooth adapter for your other accessories.

2. The same device pairs at different security levels depending on the route
This is the part that never appears on a shop page. Logitech publishes a table of the Security Manager protocols its devices use, and the two routes are not equivalent. Paired to a Logi Bolt USB receiver, both a keyboard and a mouse run at "Security Mode 1 - Security Level 4", which Logitech glosses as "Secure Connections Only mode". In a direct Bluetooth connection the same hardware drops: a keyboard uses "Security Mode 1 - Security Level 3" with "a pairing with 6-digit Passkey entry", and a mouse uses "Security Mode 1 - Security Level 2" with, in Logitech's own words, "'just works' pairing".
Logitech describes the receiver path as combining "Bluetooth Low Energy wireless technology Security Mode 1, Security Level 4 - sometimes called U.S. Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) Mode - with additional Logitech security features designed to reduce vulnerability when devices are paired to a Logi Bolt USB receiver". Whether that matters to you depends on the machine: on a shared or work computer it is a real argument for keeping the receiver in the port; on a personal desktop it may not change your choice at all. Either way it is a documented difference, not a marketing tier.
Receivers are also not interchangeable between Logitech's own families, which is where most replacement purchases go wrong. Logitech states that "Logi Bolt products cannot be paired with other Logitech USB receivers, and vice versa", while noting that Bolt products can often be used at the same time as other Logitech wireless products on one host. Its identification advice is physical: look at the logo on the receiver, and at the logo on the underside of the mouse or keyboard - Logi Bolt, Logitech Unifying and the plain 2.4 receiver are distinct families. A Bolt logo on the underside means the device works with a Bolt receiver even if none came in the box.
How many devices one receiver can carry differs sharply by purpose. Logitech states that "people can pair up to six Logi Bolt wireless mice and keyboards to a single Logi Bolt USB receiver", with the footnote that this requires its Logi Options+ app on Windows and macOS. A gaming dongle is built the other way: Razer states that its HyperPolling Wireless Dongle is "designed exclusively for mice and does not have multi-device support". If you plan to run a mouse and a keyboard from one port, the family matters more than the brand.

3. Range, latency and interference: read the footnotes, not the headline
Logitech's range figure is specific and conditional. It states that "Logi Bolt wireless devices are Bluetooth Class 2, with up to 10 meters (33 feet) wireless range", and where the same figure appears in its marketing it carries the footnote "wireless range may vary depending on operating environment and computer setup". Ten metres is a ceiling measured somewhere else, not a promise about a desk with a metal tower under it.
The latency claim needs the same treatment, and Logitech does publish the conditions. The headline is "up to 8x lower latency ... than other commonly deployed wireless protocols for enterprises". The footnote says the "test conducted by Logitech in controlled conditions" compared "all else the same" its receiver connection against competing protocols, and defines the noisy end as "three Wi-Fi access points set at 1000 mW each distanced at 2 meters from the test subject with additional adjacent wireless devices set at 8 mW each: two active Bluetooth devices and three active Logi Bolt product users distanced at 0.5 meters". The competitors are named only as Company A to Company D. This is the maker's own test, under conditions it chose, and it is quoted here as such - no independent comparison is being presented.
Interference is not only a radio-protocol matter, and Microsoft documents the most common physical cause: "if your Bluetooth device is unresponsive or sluggish, check to make sure it's not too close to any other USB device that's plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Unshielded USB devices can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth connections." A tiny receiver pushed into a rear panel between an external SSD and a hub is exactly that case, so a front port or a short USB extension cable is a cheaper first move than a new mouse.
Battery is the cost the fast end of the market pays. Razer publishes that with 8000 Hz polling on its dongle, battery life on a Viper V2 Pro is "around 17 hours with constant motion at 8000 Hz" - a different figure from the multi-day life expected of an office mouse. 4. Choosing, and the two things to check before you pay
Work from the port budget first. A receiver costs one port permanently, but Logitech's six-device figure means one port can serve a mouse and a keyboard from the same family - and its receivers exist in Type A and Type C, so a laptop with only USB-C is not automatically excluded. If every port is occupied and the PC already has Bluetooth, the Bluetooth version of the same product removes the problem at the cost of the pairing step and, on Logitech's published table, a lower pairing security level.
Then check the other end: does the PC have Bluetooth at all? Microsoft's troubleshooting article states plainly that "some devices don't have Bluetooth" and tells you to check the product specifications, and a desktop built from parts often has none unless the motherboard lists it. Operating system support is worth reading per device class, because it is not uniform. Logitech states that Logi Bolt works with Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android, iOS and iPadOS - and then qualifies it twice in footnotes: basic functions are supported without additional drivers on ChromeOS and most popular Linux distributions, while the footnote "support is for Logi Bolt wireless keyboards only" is attached to Android and to iOS. iPadOS is listed in the same sentence without that footnote, so Logitech neither extends the keyboards-only limit to it nor states that mice are supported there. If you intend to move one device between a PC and a tablet, check that footnote against the specific product page.
Finally, plan for losing the receiver, because it is the most common way a working mouse becomes useless. Logitech's position is that Bolt products cannot use another family's receiver, that a Bolt logo on the underside means the device works with a Bolt receiver even if one did not come in the box, and that receivers can be bought separately. So before buying, note which family the device belongs to; and if long-term serviceability matters more than pairing security, a model that supports both a receiver and direct Bluetooth gives you a fallback that a receiver-only model does not.

The Logi Bolt details describe Logitech's own ecosystem; another manufacturer's receiver, security level, device count and operating-system support will differ, and its own documentation is the one to read for its products.
- Logitech's range and latency figures are the manufacturer's own claims with the manufacturer's own conditions, which are quoted in full in section 3 - including that the latency test was conducted by Logitech in controlled conditions against competitors identified only as Company A to Company D. No independent comparison is presented, and this site measured nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy the receiver version or the Bluetooth version of the same mouse?
If a USB port is free, the receiver version is the simpler purchase: Logitech states that Logi Bolt products are pre-paired to their receivers in the factory, so there is no discovery or pairing step, and its published security table puts the receiver connection at Security Mode 1, Security Level 4 (Secure Connections Only) against Level 2 'just works' for a mouse in a direct Bluetooth connection. If ports are scarce and the PC already has Bluetooth, the Bluetooth version removes the port cost, and for a mouse the practical difference in daily use is the pairing step rather than the pointer. One more consideration: Logitech states that up to six Logi Bolt mice and keyboards can share a single receiver with its Options+ app, so if you are buying a keyboard as well, staying in one family can cost you only one port for both.
I lost the receiver. Can I use a spare one from another Logitech device?
Not across families. Logitech states that "Logi Bolt products cannot be paired with other Logitech USB receivers, and vice versa", although Bolt products can often be used alongside other Logitech wireless products on the same computer. Identify what you have physically: look at the logo on the receiver, and at the logo on the underside of the mouse or keyboard - Logi Bolt, Logitech Unifying and the plain 2.4 receiver are separate families. Logitech also notes that a Bolt logo on the underside means the device is compatible with a Bolt receiver even if one did not come in the box, and that receivers can be bought separately. If the device also supports direct Bluetooth, pairing it that way is the immediate workaround while you obtain the right receiver.
My wireless mouse stutters or lags. Is the dongle the problem?
Check placement before you buy anything. Microsoft states that if a Bluetooth device is unresponsive or sluggish you should make sure it is not too close to another USB device plugged into a USB 3.0 port, because unshielded USB devices can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth connections - a receiver wedged between an external SSD and a hub on the rear panel is the classic case. Moving it to a front port or on to a short USB extension cable is the first thing to try. Distance matters too: Logitech's 10 metre figure is for Bluetooth Class 2 devices and carries the footnote that range may vary with the operating environment and computer setup, so a metal case between the receiver and your hand is working against it.
