Restore an Earlier OneDrive File Version Without Losing Track of Current Work
Use a OneDrive file's version history to recover an earlier state after an unwanted edit. The selected version becomes current, so preserve a separate copy of today's content if needed. Deleted files require a separate Recycle Bin check.

What you need
- Identify the correct OneDrive account and containing folder.
- Coordinate a pause in editing with collaborators before restoring.
- If current content is also needed, use the app's Save a copy or equivalent to preserve a separately named copy.
1. Distinguish overwriting from deletion
Version history applies to files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. A different file kept only on the PC may not have equivalent history.
- Sign in to OneDrive in a browser and check whether the file still exists in its folder.
- Use history when the file exists but its content is wrong. If the file itself is missing, inspect the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
2. Record the current state and target time
Choosing the oldest version can remove changes you still need. Look for a candidate between the last wanted edit and the unwanted one.
- Note the filename, location, and approximate time of the unwanted edit.
- If newer content is worth retaining, save a separately named current copy and check that it opens.
3. Open history and inspect a candidate
Choose by content as well as date. Available history is affected by account and organizational settings, so work from the versions actually shown.
- Right-click the file in OneDrive and choose Version history. With the sync app installed, File Explorer also provides this menu.
- For an Office file, use File → Info → Version History to open a candidate and compare the text or cells you need.
- Record the candidate's timestamp and verify that it is not a different file with the same name.
4. Restore the reviewed version
Restoring is more than previewing. The selected earlier version becomes current, while the former current version becomes an earlier entry in history.
- In OneDrive history, open the chosen version's ellipsis menu and select Restore.
- Reopen the file after restoration and check the specific content you intended to recover.
- Before resuming collaboration, confirm which version is now current with the other editors.
5. Verify the result on synced devices
A browser and an already-open desktop app may not immediately show the same state. Reopen the file you will work on and verify its contents.
- Check that PC synchronization has finished and reopen the file in its app.
- Review key text, formulas, or images and compare any newer changes you still need against your saved copy.
- If the result is wrong, stop further editing and reassess history and the preserved copy.
Limitations and requirements
- This procedure cannot guarantee recovery of a version absent from the available history.
- An organization may restrict versioning. Ask its administrator about configuration changes.
- Restoring one file has a different scope from rolling back an entire OneDrive.
