What to do first

Causes and conditions
Possible causes include an open or stale editing session, a checked-out document, or a location and Excel combination that does not support co-authoring.

Step-by-step instructions
Read the user named in the message and confirm the actual location through Explorer or the website. Make sure you are examining the shared workbook, not a similarly named copy.
If you only have viewing permission, ask the owner for editing access. Changing protection is not a substitute for diagnosing a lock.
If the lock names you, check other computers and windows. Save required changes, close those workbook sessions, wait briefly and reopen the shared file.
After a crash, save other work before closing and reopening the application. Avoid terminating a process that may contain unsaved edits.

If another person is named, ask them to save and close the file. Use read-only access while waiting and avoid overwriting the original with a competing copy.
For a SharePoint checkout, ask the holder to check the document in. Do not discard their editing session to release it.
For simultaneous editing, check whether the workbook is on OneDrive or SharePoint Online. A local folder or ordinary network share does not provide the same co-authoring environment.
Check the product under File > Account. A supported Microsoft 365 app or Excel for the web is an option; verify every participant rather than assuming a perpetual edition supports the workflow.

Co-authoring requires an appropriate workbook format such as .xlsx, .xlsm or .xlsb; Strict Open XML is excluded. Do not convert a macro-enabled workbook to .xlsx simply to test a lock.
If OneDrive sync is paused, resume it and inspect the status. For a web-editor trial, confirm the original location and permission; use a suitable desktop app for macro-dependent work.
After the lock clears, agree on a small test edit and save it. Reopen to check persistence and, for co-authoring, ask the other participant to verify the update.
If it remains locked, provide the administrator with the location, product, named owner and time. Do not force release by deleting temporary lock files.
