Check usage during your normal work
An idle desktop does not represent your workload. Observe the PC with the documents and applications you normally use open.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then open Performance → Memory in Task Manager.
- Repeat the operation that feels slow and compare memory use with CPU and disk activity.
- Save your work, close unnecessary apps and compare the same operation again.
Separate RAM capacity from storage capacity
RAM holds working data; an SSD retains stored files after shutdown. Adding RAM does not create free storage for a file that cannot be saved.
Check upgrade support for the exact model
Check the product and service documentation for replaceable memory, supported type, capacity and configuration. Similar-looking models can differ.
- Match the exact PC model and installed configuration to its documentation.
- For fixed memory, choose the capacity at purchase. For replaceable memory, include compatible parts and installation costs in the comparison.
Verify with the same workload afterward
Confirm the recognized capacity and repeat the original workload. A memory upgrade may not address a CPU or network bottleneck.
