Match the slot specifications

Read the documentation for the particular slot, not just the M.2 label in a product name. Check dimensions, interface and any shared-connection conditions separately.

  1. Identify the slot you intend to use in the PC or motherboard manual.
  2. Compare the supported SATA/NVMe interface and board length with the SSD specification.
  3. Check physical clearance, including any supplied heatsink.

Choose capacity separately from interface performance

NVMe can offer higher transfer performance than SATA, but observed delays also depend on the host connection, workload and drive. Separate a need for faster large-file transfers from a need for more storage space.

Separate an OS replacement from an extra data drive

Adding a data drive and replacing the Windows drive require different preparation. If the operating system must move, establish backup and recovery options before buying parts.

  1. Decide whether the new SSD supplements or replaces the current OS drive.
  2. Back up the original files elsewhere and confirm that the copies open.
  3. Keep the old SSD intact until the migration is verified.

Verify the drive after installation

Follow the PC manufacturer’s installation procedure. If a drive is not recognized, identify the disk and check its connection before initializing anything that may contain data.

  1. Compare the detected drive model and capacity with the intended SSD.
  2. For a data drive, open copied files; for an OS drive, verify startup and required apps.

Limitations and requirements

  • Do not treat capacity ceilings or “latest generation” claims in older articles as current limits. Use the actual product specification.
  • M.2 drives still need a supported interface and mounting configuration.

Does M.2 mean NVMe?

No. M.2 is a form factor, and SATA M.2 SSDs also exist. Check the drive and slot interface specifications.

Does a faster advertised drive always feel faster?

It depends on the workload and host connection. Treat additional capacity and faster transfers as separate purchasing goals.
