CAMM2 and LPCAMM2: the third kind of laptop memory, and what it does and does not tell you about upgrades

Laptop memory has long been explained as a choice of two: soldered to the board (no upgrade) or in SO-DIMM slots (upgradeable). A third form has joined them. JEDEC published JESD318, the CAMM2 common standard, in December 2023, and PS-007A, a connector performance standard for LPDDR5 CAMM2, in October 2024. As of 2026-09-20 the CAMM2 common standard's document page shows JESD318B, Version 1.14, published Nov 2025. The point that matters most is that the same CAMM2 name covers two incompatible things: the pinouts of the DDR5 and LPDDR5 versions differ, and JEDEC states that deliberate variations in mounting procedure prevent a module being fitted where it should not go. "It is CAMM2" is therefore not a compatibility statement. No particular laptop model or memory product is named.

1. CAMM2 as a third form

CAMM2 stands for Compression Attached Memory Module - a module standard in which the module is compressed onto a connector rather than slotted in. JEDEC announced the publication of the JESD318 CAMM2 common standard on 5 December 2023. By that announcement, the standard "defines the electrical and mechanical requirements for both Double Data Rate, Synchronous DRAM Compression-Attached Memory Modules (DDR5 SDRAM CAMM2s) and Low Power Double Data Rate, Synchronous DRAM Compression-Attached Memory Modules (LPDDR5/5X SDRAM CAMM2s) in a single, comprehensive document."

The intended uses are set out in the same text: "DDR5 and LPDDR5/5X CAMM2s cater to distinct use cases. DDR5 CAMM2s are intended for performance notebooks and mainstream desktops, while LPDDR5/5X CAMM2s target a broader range of notebooks and certain server market segments."

Checking the document page on 2026-09-20, the current revision is JESD318B, Release Number: Version 1.14, Published: Nov 2025. Its description names DDR5 SDRAM CAMM2s and LP5 SDRAM CAMM2s, and states that "These DDR5 and LP5 CAMM2s are intended for use as main memory when installed in computers, laptops, and other systems." That page also shows "Free download. Registration or login required." This site has not downloaded the standard; what follows rests on the document pages' descriptions and the announcements.

For the LPCAMM2 name, a separate announcement of 31 October 2024 is the source. JEDEC announced the publication of PS-007A, the "LPDDR5 CAMM2 Connector Performance Standard", and says the connector is "referred to as 'LP5CAMM2'". The same announcement describes it as "designed to offer a standardized modular LPDDR5 solution with ecosystem support, unlike the traditional LPDDR5 memory-down approach" - that is, LPDDR5 had previously assumed soldered-down memory, and this provides a modular standard instead.

2. "It is CAMM2" is not a compatibility statement

This is where the misunderstanding usually happens. Despite the shared name, DDR5 CAMM2 and LPDDR5 CAMM2 modules are not interchangeable.

The 2023 announcement says so directly: "While JESD318 CAMM2 defines a common connector design for both DDR5 and LPDDR5/X, it is crucial to note that the pinouts for each differ." JEDEC goes out of its way to flag that the connector design is shared while the pinouts are not.

There is a physical safeguard as well. The same paragraph continues: "To support different motherboard designs, intentional variations in mounting procedures between DDR5 and LPDDR5/X CAMM2s prevent the mounting of a module where it should not go."

The practical consequence is simple. When hunting for a replacement module, "CAMM2 compatible" is not enough - you have to match DDR5 against LPDDR5/5X as well. And that information is not in the JEDEC standard; it is in the PC maker's specification and service-parts information.

3. What JEDEC says it improves over SO-DIMM

The 2024 PS-007A announcement carries a bulleted comparison against a DDR5 SODIMM connector. These are design benefits JEDEC states; they are not measurements made by this site. Here they are as written.

Three items are listed: "Better signal integrity (SI) and improved radio frequency interference (RFI)"; "To enable a module solution with lower power consumption and increased battery life"; and "50% form factor reduction with the similar Z height" - that is, half the footprint at a comparable height.

The same announcement quotes committee chairs and adopting companies, but every one of those statements is about design intent, not measured product performance. This site has not compared a CAMM2 machine against a SO-DIMM machine, and publishes no figures for things like battery runtime.

There is also a stacking story. The 2023 announcement says JESD318 CAMM2 supports stackable CAMM2s, dual-channel (DC) and single-channel (SC): splitting the dual-channel connector lengthwise into two single-channel connectors lets "the first connector half" support one DDR5 memory channel at 2.85mm height while the second half supports a different channel at 7.5mm height. That is design freedom for whoever builds the machine, not something an owner can add to later.

4. Upgradeability is decided by the model, not by the standard

This point is misread often enough to be worth stating bluntly. That CAMM2 is modular does not mean that an owner can change or add memory on a given machine. JEDEC's standards set requirements for modules and connectors; how a PC maker implements them, and which parts it supplies, is a separate matter.

At least three conditions govern whether an upgrade is possible: the model has to use that module form, disassembly has to be permitted and practical, and a replacement module has to be obtainable. The standard tells you only part of the first. The other two come from the maker's specification page, its service-parts information and whether it publishes a disassembly procedure.

So, as a pre-purchase check, finding the name of the form is the starting point, not the finish. If the specification says soldered, on-board or non-replaceable, the capacity you buy is the capacity you keep. If it says memory slots x2, SO-DIMM is likely. If it says CAMM2 or LPCAMM2, the memory is modular - but you still have to establish separately whether replacement parts are supplied for that model.

Limitations and requirements

  • That CAMM2 is modular does not mean an owner can change or add memory on a given machine. Implementation and parts supply are the PC maker's decisions.
  • JEDEC states explicitly that the pinouts of DDR5 CAMM2 and LPDDR5/5X CAMM2 differ. Do not choose a replacement module on the strength of a CAMM2 label alone.
  • There are no performance measurements in this guide. The three points listed against a SO-DIMM connector are design benefits stated in JEDEC's announcement, not measurements made here.
  • The JEDEC standards themselves (JESD318B, PS-007A) are free to download with registration or login, but this site has not obtained them. The text here rests on the document pages' descriptions and the announcements.
  • No laptop model names, and no replacement-module product names or prices, appear in this guide. Availability varies by time and region.
  • Revisions change. On 2026-09-20, JESD318B showed Version 1.14 (Published Nov 2025). The 2023 announcement described JESD318.

Frequently asked questions

If a laptop has LPCAMM2, can I add memory later?

The standard makes it modular, but that alone does not settle it. Whether the model is designed for replacement, and whether replacement modules are supplied, are matters for the PC maker. Check the maker's specification page and service-parts information. The JEDEC standard cannot tell you.

Will a CAMM2 module fit any CAMM2 machine?

No. JEDEC writes that "it is crucial to note that the pinouts for each differ" between the DDR5 and LPDDR5/X versions, and adds that deliberate variations in mounting procedure prevent a module being fitted where it should not go. You have to match DDR5 against LPDDR5/5X as well.

Is CAMM2 better than SO-DIMM?

What JEDEC lists in its announcement are three design benefits relative to a DDR5 SODIMM connector: better signal integrity and improved radio frequency interference; enabling a module solution with lower power consumption and increased battery life; and a 50% form factor reduction at similar Z height. Those are statements of design intent, not measurements of any product. This site has made no comparison measurements.

Does CAMM2 concern desktops at all?

The 2023 announcement names both performance notebooks and mainstream desktops as intended uses for DDR5 CAMM2. However, none of the primary sources read here says anything about how widely desktop CAMM2 products are actually available. That desktops currently run mostly on DIMMs is something you can confirm from any motherboard specification sheet.

How do I find out which form my own laptop uses?

The memory row of the maker's product specification page. On-board, soldered or non-replaceable means the capacity is fixed at purchase; memory slots x2 most likely means SO-DIMM; CAMM2 or LPCAMM2 means modular, with a separate check needed on whether replacement parts are supplied. If nothing is stated, ask the maker rather than inferring.
