B650 vs. B850 vs. X870: Check USB4, M.2 Sharing and CPU Support

An AM5 chipset name does not establish the board's port count or simultaneous-use restrictions. Use AMD's current table and three ASUS examples to choose around CPU, SSD and USB requirements.

1. Start with your USB and expansion requirements

Choose B650, B850 or X870 around your CPU, GPU, SSD count and USB devices. AMD's current AM5 table checked on September 12, 2026 lists PCIe 5.0 NVMe and optional USB4 for B850, and PCIe 5.0 graphics/NVMe plus standard USB4 for X870. Port counts and shared connections still depend on the board.

AMD's B850 graphics row says PCIe 4.0, but individual boards can implement PCIe 5.0. The current table has no B650 row, so the B650 example below uses ASUS's product specification.

  1. List current SSDs, SATA drives, capture cards and USB devices, plus planned additions.
  2. Decide whether USB4, PCIe 5.0 storage or PCIe 5.0 graphics is a requirement, then open each candidate's specification page.

2. Compare three actual boards to separate the chipset from its implementation

These are specification examples for three ASUS TUF GAMING models. The GPU column describes the primary slot with a Ryzen 9000 or 7000 processor, before sharing reduces its width. The table does not apply to every board with the same chipset.

  1. Match the listing's exact model to the specification. Distinguish B650 from B650E, X870 from X870E and versions with or without Wi-Fi.
  2. Keep models with the required drive capacity and connectors, then check simultaneous-use restrictions in the next section.

3. Plan SSD placement and identify any disabled slots

Slot count does not guarantee that every desired device can operate together. On the example X870-PLUS WIFI, M.2_2 shares lanes with the primary GPU slot, reducing it to x8 when used; M.2_2 is unavailable with Ryzen 8000 processors. The example B650 and B850 boards also disable their second long slot when M.2_3 is populated.

An x8 link does not translate into one universal frame-rate penalty. The purpose here is to check whether your planned layout preserves the connections you require.

  1. Read Expansion Slots, Storage and the manual's sharing notes, using the row for your processor.
  2. Assign each GPU, SSD and expansion card to a named slot, then check for disabled connectors or changed link speeds.
  3. Add planned upgrades to the same layout. If a restriction conflicts with your needs, consider another slot arrangement or board.

4. Check USB capability rather than the Type-C shape

The example B850-PLUS WIFI has a 20Gbps rear USB-C port and a 10Gbps front-panel Type-C header. The X870-PLUS WIFI provides two 40Gbps rear USB4 ports. The Type-C shape alone does not establish matching USB4, video or power-delivery capabilities.

  1. Check the requirements of your external SSD or dock, and distinguish rear ports from front-panel headers.
  2. For front-panel USB-C, verify the case cable, motherboard header and supported speed.
  3. For display output or charging, verify explicit support for that function instead of relying only on the data-rate specification.

5. Verify CPU support, BIOS requirements and memory configuration

An AM5 socket and DDR5 support do not by themselves confirm that the shipped BIOS can start your chosen CPU. For memory, check the CPU, kit model and module count in the support list, rather than relying only on maximum capacity or advertised overclocked speed.

  1. Search the exact CPU in the board's support page, then confirm the required BIOS and shipped compatibility with the retailer.
  2. Match the CPU generation and memory kit in the support list, including the tested module count. Do not treat mixed kits as the same configuration.
  3. If an update is needed, confirm a retailer update service or the model's supported update procedure before buying.

6. Compare prices among boards that meet your actual needs

A chipset name does not produce a universal value ranking. Without a USB4 requirement, suitable B650 and B850 boards remain candidates. When USB4 matters, X870 is a useful starting point, but verify SSD sharing and SATA availability. This article has not established a price or benchmark ranking.

Limitations and requirements

  • The comparison uses the named ASUS models. Do not apply their specifications to another board or CPU configuration.
  • Maximum M.2 or PCIe speeds and slot counts do not describe every simultaneous-use configuration. Read the sharing notes.

Frequently asked questions

Does B850 exclude PCIe 5.0 graphics?

AMD's current graphics row lists PCIe 4.0, but the TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI implements PCIe 5.0 x16 with Ryzen 9000 or 7000. Check the specific board and CPU combination.

Does X870 always support more SATA drives than B650 or B850?

No. The example X870 board has two SATA ports, while the example B650 and B850 boards have four. Use the actual port count and sharing conditions.
