Before buying an expansion card: an x16-shaped slot can run at x1, and M.2 carrier cards need bifurcation
Choosing an expansion card by looking at which slot is free goes wrong for two reasons. Spec pages regularly describe a slot with an x16 connector as running in x1 mode. And a card that holds several M.2 SSDs divides one slot between them, which the board and CPU have to be able to do — otherwise not all the drives appear. This guide was written on 2026-09-21 from three motherboard specification pages and a maker FAQ, and reports the conditions they state. No card was run on hardware here; what follows is where to check, not a verdict on any combination.

1. A slot with an x16 connector can run at x1
The expansion slot section of ASUS PRIME B650M-A II reads, under AMD B650 Chipset: 2 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slots (support x1 mode). The connector is x16; the stated mode is x1.
MSI writes a line per slot. On PRO B650M-A WIFI: PCI_E1 Gen PCIe 4.0 supports up to x16 (From CPU), PCI_E2 Gen PCIe 3.0 supports up to x1 (From Chipset), PCI_E3 Gen PCIe 4.0 supports up to x4 (From Chipset). Three slots differing in generation, lane count and source.
On ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI the chipset slot is physically small as well: 1 x PCIe 4.0 x1 slot. There, shape and behaviour agree.
So having a free x16 slot is not evidence about how many lanes reach it. When a product states a lane requirement — a 10GbE network card asking for x4, for instance — that line is the one to read first.
2. The top slot changes with the CPU too
Even the top slot, the one the graphics card goes in, is conditional. ASUS PRIME B650M-A II lists 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (supports x16 mode) under AMD Ryzen 9000 & 7000 Series Desktop Processors, and 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (supports x8/x4 mode)** under AMD Ryzen 8000 Series Desktop Processors, with the footnote ** Specifications vary by CPU types.
On ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI the generation itself moves: 1 x PCIe 5.0 x16 slot (supports x16 mode) for 9000/7000, and 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (supports x8/x4 mode)** for 8000.
MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI spells out three cases: Supports x16/x4 (For Ryzen 9000/ 7000 Series processors), Supports x8/x4 (For Ryzen 8700/ 8600/ 8400 Series processors), Supports x4/x4 (For Ryzen 8500/ 8300 Series processors). How lanes are distributed across two slots has three answers depending on the processor.

3. Why an M.2 carrier card asks for bifurcation
A card that holds several M.2 SSDs takes the sixteen lanes reaching one x16 slot and hands four to each drive. The board and CPU have to be able to make that division; that is bifurcation. On a card without its own switching silicon, an environment that cannot divide the slot cannot present all the drives.
The ASUS FAQ puts it as: Maximum M.2 SSDs support will vary depending on different CPUs and motherboards.
The same FAQ gives a numbered procedure. Step 1, find your motherboard in the model list. Step 2, check the CPU — for Intel, Please check PCI Express lane; for AMD, please check the CPU model name. Step 3, check which PCIe slot the add-on graphics card goes into. Step 4 works through an example in which filling one slot with four drives leaves no lanes to map drives in another slot, while using two leaves enough for two more elsewhere.
The cards themselves come in generations. The FAQ's Q&A states: HYPER M.2X16 CARD V2 supports PCI Express 3.0, HYPER M.2X16 GEN 4 CARD supports both PCI Express 3.0 and PCI Express 4.0, HYPER M.2 x16 GEN5 CARD supports both PCI Express 4.0 and PCI Express 5.0.
Sometimes a BIOS setting is part of it. The FAQ tells W790 series owners installing a Gen5 card into a PCIe Gen4-only slot to configure that slot's PCIe speed to Gen 4. Seating the card is not always the last step.
4. What you are adding decides which line to read
Different kinds of card ask for different things. The table maps what you are buying to the line to read first.
The M.2 carrier card is the one kind held apart, because it is the only kind where one card has to appear as several devices. For the rest, the question is simply whether enough lanes reach the slot.

5. How to read a compatibility list
The ASUS FAQ carries Model list (Updated on March 2024) while the page itself shows Last Update 2026/02/05. The list's date and the page's date are stated separately. If your board is newer, it may simply not be on the list.
The FAQ also carries restrictions that sit outside this guide's subject but are expensive to miss: update to the latest BIOS before using the RAID on CPU function; on Z590, Z490, Z390 and Z370 series boards install IRST version 16 or above; on the Intel platform only Intel SSDs can activate Intel RAID on CPU; and on X299 series boards the VROC function needs a hardware key that is purchased separately. If RAID is the reason you are buying a carrier card, read those four first.
Finally, what this guide did not do. No carrier card was run on hardware here. What is written above is the set of conditions the makers publish and where to find them. Whether one specific board, card and CPU work together has to be confirmed against the maker's compatibility list.
Limitations and requirements
- The wording quoted here was read on 2026-09-21. Both compatibility lists and specification pages are revised. Open them again on the day you buy.
- This guide reads an ASUS FAQ as its example. For another maker's carrier card, consult that maker's own guidance; this site does not extrapolate one vendor's conditions to another.
- Bifurcation is sometimes configured in the BIOS. Setting names and locations differ per product, so no specific BIOS steps are given here.
Frequently asked questions
There is a free x16 slot, so will any card fit?
Shape and behaviour are separate. ASUS PRIME B650M-A II describes its two chipset-fed slots as 2 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slots (support x1 mode). When a card states a lane requirement, read that line before buying.
If I buy an M.2 carrier card, can I fit four SSDs?
The ASUS FAQ states that the maximum number supported varies with the CPU and the motherboard, and gives a procedure: find the board in the model list, check the CPU, and account for which slot the graphics card occupies.
What is bifurcation?
Splitting the lanes that reach one slot so they can be assigned to several devices. A carrier card holding multiple M.2 SSDs depends on it, and in an environment that cannot split the slot, not all the drives can be presented.
Does installing a graphics card slow down the other slots?
Some boards state the distribution per CPU. MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI gives three cases: x16/x4 with Ryzen 9000/7000, x8/x4 with 8700/8600/8400, and x4/x4 with 8500/8300. Read the line for your own processor.
My motherboard is not on the compatibility list.
The ASUS FAQ's list carries its own date, Model list (Updated on March 2024), separate from the page's update date, so a newer board may simply be absent. This site cannot decide the question from that absence; ask the maker.
