Before you buy a second SSD: the M.2 slots on your board are not interchangeable
When people add an SSD, they usually check one thing: is there a free M.2 slot. But a motherboard's official spec page lists each M.2 slot on its own line, and there is a reason for that. On the same board, slots differ in PCIe generation and lane count, differ in the board lengths they accept, and can change depending on which CPU is installed. This guide was written on 2026-09-21 after reading the official spec pages for four boards — two AMD, one Intel, all in the same broad price class — and it reports only what those pages actually say. No speed was measured here. There is one thing to do afterwards: open your own board's spec page by model number and check the same four items.

What you need
- Write down your board's exact model name (System Information shows it as BaseBoard Product on Windows, or read the silkscreen on the board)
- Write down your exact CPU model (Settings > System > About)
- Open the maker's Specification / Tech Specs page for that exact model
1. The lanes come from different places on different slots
The PCIe lanes that reach an M.2 slot come either directly from the CPU or through the chipset. Makers word this differently, but both write it down.
MSI states the source explicitly. The PRO B860M-A WIFI spec page reads: 3x M.2 M.2_1 Source (From CPU) supports up to PCIe 5.0 x4 , supports 2280/2260/2242 devices M.2_2 Source (From Chipset) supports up to PCIe 4.0 x4 , supports 2280/2260 devices M.2_3 Source (From Chipset) supports up to PCIe 4.0 x2 , supports 2280 devices. Three M.2 slots, and the source, the PCIe generation, the lane count and the supported lengths all differ.
The third slot, M.2_3, is PCIe 4.0 at x2 — half the lanes. Putting a PCIe 5.0 SSD there does not change what the page says about the slot. This guide measured nothing, so it will not tell you a megabytes-per-second figure. What it can say is that the slot's stated condition is not the same as the other two.
ASUS groups the same information under headings instead. The PRIME B650M-A II page puts M.2_1 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280 (supports PCIe 5.0 x4 mode) under the heading AMD Ryzen 9000 & 7000 Series Desktop Processors, and puts M.2_2 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280 (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode) under a separate heading, AMD B650 Chipset. The heading is the source.
2. The same slot changes with the CPU you installed
This is the item that gets missed when a spec page is skimmed by model number. On the same board and the same slot, the stated condition can depend on the processor.
ASUS PRIME B650M-A II lists M.2_1 twice. Under AMD Ryzen 9000 & 7000 Series Desktop Processors it reads supports PCIe 5.0 x4 mode; under AMD Ryzen 8000 Series Desktop Processors the same slot reads supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode. Same board, same slot, different CPU.
On ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI the wording shifts again for M.2_2. Under 9000/7000 it reads supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode; under 8000 it reads supports PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 mode*, with the footnote * Specifications vary by CPU types. With x4 and x2 printed together, this page alone does not let this guide state which one applies.
MSI's PRO B650M-A WIFI goes further and states a condition outright: The M2_2 slot will be unavailable when using Ryzen 8500/ 8300 Series processor. On that combination the second M.2 slot is not usable at all. As things to discover after buying an SSD go, this is near the top.
So the phrase two M.2 slots only acquires meaning once it is paired with your CPU. When you open the page, read the CPU heading above the slot line and the footnote after it, not just the slot line.
3. The length of the SSD you buy is also decided per slot
The 2280 or 2242 in an M.2 SSD's name is the board's width and length: 22 mm wide, and the last two digits are the length in millimetres. Which lengths a slot accepts is printed on the spec page.
They are not consistent within one board. On ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI, M.2_1 is type 2280, M.2_2 is type 2242/2260/2280 and M.2_3 is type 2280. On MSI PRO B860M-A WIFI, M.2_1 takes 2280/2260/2242, M.2_2 takes 2280/2260, and M.2_3 takes 2280 only.
The practical consequence is narrow. Retail desktop SSDs are overwhelmingly 2280, so a slot that only accepts 2280 rarely causes trouble. The problem runs the other way: you already own a short 2242 drive and assume any free slot will take it. A slot listed as 2280 only has no standoff position to secure the shorter board.
The table below reproduces what the four pages say. It is not a ranking. It exists to show that four boards in a similar price class do not share the same conditions.

4. The four lines to read before you add a drive
Open your own board's page and work through the Storage section in this order. Every step is reading only; the case stays closed.
The order matters. Reaching item four and only then finding that item one fails is how a new SSD ends up in a drawer.

5. What these pages do not tell you
Some things are absent from all four pages. Where they are absent, this guide leaves them absent.
First, sharing with SATA. None of the four pages states that using an M.2 slot disables a SATA port. That absence is not evidence that no board behaves that way. Check whether the SATA line on your own model's page carries a footnote.
Second, heatsinks. MSI PRO B860M-A WIFI's M.2 entry says *Please refer to the manual for M.2 SSD heatsink restrictions. The page states that restrictions exist; the content is in the manual. This guide did not read the manual PDF, so it states no specific restriction.
Third, measurement. Nothing here was benchmarked. How much of the x2 versus x4 difference you would notice in your own use is a separate question, and a specification difference is not the same thing as a felt difference.
0Limitations and requirements
- The four sets of wording quoted here were read on 2026-09-21. Motherboard spec pages are revised as BIOS updates add processor support. Open your own model's page on the day you buy.
- The same product name can have separate pages for WIFI and non-WIFI variants or for board revisions. Confirm that the product name at the top of the page matches the printing on your board exactly.
- This guide lines up four sets of published wording; it does not recommend a motherboard. The four were chosen to show that boards in a similar price class do not share the same conditions.
Frequently asked questions
If the board has two M.2 slots, can I assume I can fit two SSDs?
Check it against your CPU. The MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI spec page states that the M2_2 slot will be unavailable when using a Ryzen 8500/8300 series processor. The slot count alone does not settle it.
If I buy a PCIe 5.0 SSD, will it be faster in any slot?
The slot's stated condition is the ceiling. MSI PRO B860M-A WIFI lists M.2_1 as PCIe 5.0 x4 and M.2_3 as PCIe 4.0 x2. This guide measured nothing, so it quotes no figure, but nothing on the page describes behaviour above the slot's stated condition.
Can I put a 2242 SSD I already own into any free slot?
It depends on the type wording for that slot. On ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI, M.2_2 is 2242/2260/2280 while M.2_1 and M.2_3 are 2280 only. A slot listed as 2280 only has no standoff position for the shorter board.
I have heard that using M.2 disables SATA ports.
None of the four spec pages read here states that condition. An absence on a page is not a source for saying the behaviour does not exist, so this guide makes no claim either way. Check whether the SATA line in the Storage section of your own model's page carries a footnote.
Is per-slot detail useful before I have bought the board?
Yes. Before buying you can open the candidate pages side by side and compare the same four items: the condition against your CPU, generation and lane count, accepted lengths, and heatsink restrictions. Sorting boards by the number of M.2 slots hides all four.
