AMD Software Error 182: graphics driver installation stops
What to do first
Instead of repeatedly running the newest package based on the model name alone, identify the GPU's Embedded, Legacy or OEM class and switch to a compatible package.
This is a general troubleshooting guide, not an announcement of a current outage.
Affected products and symptoms
- Product
- AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
- Versions and conditions
- Windows 10 / 11; AMD Software Installer (no specific release)
- Error codes and identifiers
- Error 182GPU-KB182
Symptoms
- AMD graphics are detected, but installation is cancelled
- The installer reports unsupported AMD graphics in the system configuration
Causes and conditions
The detected GPU is an Embedded, Legacy or OEM-customized product outside the supported range of the standard AMD Software package being run.
Before you start
- Save the error screen and Install.log
- Record the PC and GPU models, Windows version and OS build
- For laptops and all-in-one PCs, locate the manufacturer's support page
Precautions
- Do not force an INF intended for a different GPU
- Generic laptop drivers may not support manufacturer-specific features
Tools and official pages used in this guide
Select a supported release or OEM route for the product class. Do not force the latest consumer package onto unsupported hardware.
Step-by-step instructions
Confirm that the AMD Installer exit screen reports Error 182. Other codes have different causes and remedies; do not reuse this procedure for them.
If needed, copy C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Log\Install.log and retain it with the date and time.
Check the displayed code, AMD Software version and GPU name, and save screenshots or notes together. If the code differs, stop this procedure and use the official article for that code.
Open Device Manager → Display adapters to find the GPU name. For a manufacturer's laptop, all-in-one or customized system, also record the PC model.
If the name is unclear, follow AMD's product identification guidance to check hardware IDs or product labels.
On a manufacturer-built PC, check the support page for the exact PC model before selecting AMD's generic package. Switchable graphics, integrated GPUs and handheld PCs may require OEM drivers; record the current version and keep a recovery package.
For Embedded products, select Graphics → Radeon Embedded in AMD Drivers and Support. For Legacy products, search the model and select its final published compatible release.
For OEM-customized GPUs, obtain the driver from the PC manufacturer's or system builder's page for that model.
During setup, close games, recording tools, GPU monitoring tools and other installers. Wait for completion or a specific new error code. Do not turn off the PC if the display flickers briefly.

- AMD Drivers and Support
Select a supported release or OEM route for the product class. Do not force the latest consumer package onto unsupported hardware.
Check before continuingThe official AMD Drivers and Support page or signed download opens, and its product, OS and version requirements match this PC.
- AMD Drivers and Support
For older APUs/GPUs listed in AMD's article as Windows Update only, open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates to obtain the driver.
Retrying the standard Adrenalin package will not change its compatibility.
After restarting, open Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU → Properties → Driver and check the provider and version. If the result is wrong, save Install.log and the last outcome instead of repeatedly retrying.
Recheck the download source, target OS and GPU name, then install and restart if requested. In Device Manager, check for warning symbols and confirm that the screen resolution is normal.
Finally, open the gear icon → System in AMD Software and check the GPU name and Software & Driver versions. Retry the original game, display or installation operation once under the same conditions; undo the change if new symptoms appear.
Completion check: installation finishes without Error 182, and Device Manager shows the correct GPU and driver version. If not, avoid repeating the same operation. If no compatible package is available, send the model details and Install.log to the PC manufacturer or AMD Customer Care.
Check before continuingExpected result: the package source, target OS and GPU match; installation and any requested restart complete; Device Manager has no warning and the resolution is normal. Check the GPU and Software & Driver versions under the AMD Software gear icon → System, then retry the original operation once under the same conditions. Undo the change if new symptoms appear.
Check the result
- Installation completes without Error 182 returning
- Device Manager shows the correct GPU name and driver version
- On an OEM PC, the model and OS match the manufacturer's supported list
If the problem continues
- If no compatible download is available, send model details and Install.log to the PC manufacturer or AMD Customer Care
- If an older product only has a final supported release, use it within its release-note limitations; do not expect new features
Scope of this guide
Troubleshooting guide — Install the matching Embedded driver, final supported Legacy release, OEM package or Windows Update driver for the GPU.
Frequently asked questions
Will the latest release install on an older GPU?
No. For Legacy products, choose the final published compatible release.
Can I use the AMD.com package on an OEM PC?
An OEM-customized product can cause Error 182. Prefer the PC manufacturer's package first.
