Use calibre bookmarks and Reference mode for reading notes
Keep purposeful bookmarks and paragraph references rather than relying solely on resume state. Check retrieval after layout changes, edition differences and annotations in an EPUB intended for sharing.

Who this guide is for and what to prepare
- People reading books or reference documents on a PC
- Readers who want to verify display and persistence separately
What you need
- Prepare a document you are entitled to use and keep an original plus a working copy
- Check the application version and document format
Separate resume state from bookmarks
The viewer remembers a stopping position, but use bookmarks for important passages. Resume state moves as you continue reading; bookmarks better suit two locations you want to compare later.
Distinguish your latest stopping point from a definition worth revisiting while studying another chapter. One resume state cannot retain both roles. Choose different naming conventions for progress and reference marks, starting with a small set.
Create a bookmark
Display the target paragraph and create a mark through Bookmarks. Use a purposeful name such as "Chapter 2 exceptions". Move to a different chapter and verify that the bookmark returns to the intended passage.
Name bookmarks by chapter and purpose instead of repeatedly using "important." Verify the current book and test returning after a font adjustment. This checks whether your note identifies content rather than a temporary screen boundary.
- Open Bookmarks at the target paragraph
- Add a chapter-and-purpose mark
- Visit another chapter and return
- Record a paragraph reference in Reference mode
- Use Go to and compare the passage
- Record edition and chapter in your note
Use the chapter contents
Use the book's table of contents to move between chapters and personal bookmarks for finer locations. Even when the outline is sparse, combine the two before considering edits to the book.
Use contents for broad chapter movement and bookmarks for a particular example within a chapter. Missing outline entries do not necessarily mean missing prose; try search too. Verify whether personal navigation meets your needs before editing structure, while keeping the author's outline distinct from your marks.
Refer to a paragraph
Reference mode supplies paragraph reference numbers. Record the edition, chapter and reference in your notes. It does not automatically validate a quotation or its source; inspect the actual passage as well.
Enable Reference mode at the passage, record its paragraph reference, then test Go to after visiting another chapter. Supply title, edition and chapter with the reference when communicating it. Verify quoted wording separately; a numbered location alone does not establish quotation accuracy.

| Resume location moved on | Latest point versus reference | Create a separate reference mark |
| Reference reaches different content | Book edition | Recheck chapter and query |

Review an EPUB before sharing
The manual documents bookmarks stored inside EPUB files and an option to disable this under Miscellaneous. Keep an original and inspect a sharing copy for personal marks. Do not assume the same behavior as application-only PDF favorites.
Before sharing, distinguish your marked EPUB from the source. Personal comments can change what the copy reveals. After changing storage preferences, test with a short mark and do not assume previously embedded data is automatically removed. Permission to distribute the book is a separate requirement from annotation visibility.
When references differ between editions
If an updated or reorganized edition no longer matches a reference, locate it again by chapter and a short query. Do not treat an old reference as an exact position in the new edition; record the edition you rechecked.
Compare editions before replacing old notes. Changed chapters or examples mean an old reference cannot automatically support a new edition. Record old and new locations separately when appropriate. Distinguish display reflow from substantive revision.
Work through a reader scenario
In a study book, mark a definition as "Chapter 2 basic definition" and an exception as "Chapter 4 exclusions." Navigate broadly with contents and precisely with bookmarks. Record title, edition, chapter and paragraph reference in the comparison note.
After changing font size, return to both and verify the same text despite new screen boundaries. Recheck the actual explanation in a new edition rather than trusting matching numbers. For collaborative study, verify sharing rights and personal annotations, and consider whether an edition-specific location note is sufficient.
Diagnose problems and recover
If a bookmark reaches different prose, verify book and edition. Reflow changes boundaries while headings and wording should still correspond. Search a short phrase if they do not. Record the edition change alongside updated references so earlier reasoning remains traceable.
Open the actual EPUB intended for sharing to inspect personal marks; a changed preference alone is not evidence of a clean copy. Organize collaborative notes and verify distribution rights. Bookmark portability does not change those rights; a title, edition and reference note can be sufficient.
Limitations and requirements
- Display adjustments do not improve source image resolution or repair PDF reading order.
- Menu names and available features can differ by installed version; compare the official documentation with your screen.
Frequently asked questions
Can bookmarks change my original EPUB?
They can be stored inside EPUB files. Keep a separate original and check the viewer's Miscellaneous preferences.
Is a reference number enough for a quotation?
Include title, edition and chapter and verify the wording. The number identifies a location, not quotation accuracy.
Does disabling storage remove old marks?
Do not assume it removes existing marks. Inspect the actual sharing file and distinguish source from annotated copies.
What if my bookmark list becomes hard to use?
Separate completed checks from rereading marks, name by chapter and purpose, and retain important references in an ordinary note before cleanup.
