Set EPUB text size and reading layout in calibre
Compare text size and layout using the same selectable EPUB paragraph. Inspect tables and illustrations separately and retain a heading-based return point when pagination changes.

Who this guide is for and what to prepare
- People reading books or reference documents on a PC
- Readers who want to verify display and persistence separately
What you need
- Prepare a document you are entitled to use and keep an original plus a working copy
- Check the application version and document format
Open the viewer
Select the book in the library and open View. Adjust the layout using a selectable-text EPUB passage as your baseline. Protected proprietary formats may require their designated application; do not assume conversion will make them readable.
Check which format you opened. A PDF preserves page composition while a reflowable EPUB supports different reading arrangements. Confusing them can turn an expected font change into page scaling. Test selection and record the heading of your comparison paragraph before adjusting settings.
Choose a text size
Adjust text with Ctrl + Plus or Ctrl + Minus and return to the default using Ctrl + 0. Read several lines and inspect line length as well. Larger text changes pagination, so previous screen counts are not a stable reference.
Larger text is not always easier: too few lines increase navigation and reduce context. Adjust gradually and choose a size that lets you follow a paragraph. If keys fail, close search or input controls and refocus the prose. Test the reset control early so later comparisons remain easy.
- Select the intended format and open View
- Record the prose heading
- Adjust gradually with Ctrl + Plus or Minus
- Compare the default with Ctrl + 0
- Compare Paged and Flow on the same paragraph with Ctrl + M
- Inspect a table and illustration before choosing a prose view
Choose pages or scrolling
Compare Paged and Flow using Ctrl + M. Try Paged if turning screens suits you, or Flow to follow long prose vertically. Compare the same paragraph so the layout difference is easier to judge.
Compare modes on the same prose rather than after reading another chapter. Check reading order if a wide window creates multiple columns. Reflow may make the passage appear to move; return using its heading and a short phrase before diagnosing missing content.
When a table gets clipped
Wide tables or code may not wrap like ordinary prose. Switch to Flow and inspect whether the needed columns are visible. Try a display change before converting or editing the book.
Test widening the window separately from switching to Flow so you know which change helps. If reducing text size, keep values readable and restore prose sizing afterward. Inspect headings, units and notes before interpreting only the visible columns.

| Observed result | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Pagination changes with font | Reflowable prose | Return by heading and Location |
| Table clipped on right | Window width and mode | Compare one change at a time |
| Illustration unreadable | Separate image content | Open the image separately |
| No print-page navigation | Print-page metadata | Use chapter and phrase |
Enlarge an illustration separately
Text sizing may not be enough for a detailed illustration. The documented viewer can open an image in a separate window, including by double-clicking it. Return to the prose afterward and check the relationship with its caption.
When opening an image separately, retain its figure number and read the caption in the prose if it is absent from the image window. Compare at a smaller size if enlargement blurs it. Enlarging text does not add detail to an illustration. Return to the same chapter and reread its explanation.
Record a location by heading
A reflowable book changes screen boundaries with text size and window width. Record a chapter heading or viewer Location for rereading. Mapping to print pages is available only in books containing that metadata, so do not assume it exists.
Another device or window width can place the same prose on a different screen. Record chapter and Location instead of only a screen count. For print comparison, verify that the book contains print-page metadata; otherwise use a chapter and short phrase rather than inventing a conversion.
Work through a reader scenario
For a text-heavy technical book on a laptop, record the setup-requirements heading and enlarge text gradually. Reset if only a few lines remain, then select an intermediate size. Compare the same paragraph in Paged and Flow and choose the direction that suits your reading.
Inspect a specification table with a wider window and adjust sizing only while needed. Check units and notes, open figures separately, then return to prose. Confirm all three content types are readable and retain chapter plus Location, not a screen count that changes with layout.
Diagnose problems and recover
If font keys do nothing, leave search or settings inputs and refocus the prose. Test resetting on the same paragraph. An unaffected image is a separate content type; fixed pages also differ from reflowable text. Verify format and mode before conversion.
For clipped tables or code, compare Flow separately from window width. Check publisher alternatives if content remains inaccessible rather than imposing unusual settings on every book. After restoration, inspect both ordinary prose and the problem table for regressions in readability.
Limitations and requirements
- Display adjustments do not improve source image resolution or repair PDF reading order.
- Menu names and available features can differ by installed version; compare the official documentation with your screen.
Frequently asked questions
Can larger text change the page count?
Screen boundaries can change. Use a heading or Location to return to the same passage.
Does PDF behave like reflowable EPUB text?
Fixed pages and reflowable text differ. Check the opened format and distinguish page scaling from font sizing.
Should I convert a book to read one table?
Try window width and Flow first. A workable view may avoid changes to content or structure caused by conversion.
Why do screen counts differ on another device?
Text size and width change layout. Use a heading or Location to find the same passage.
