Redact Sensitive PDF Information in Acrobat Pro and Verify the Saved Copy
Use Acrobat Pro redaction to remove selected PDF text or images. A black drawing placed over content can leave the underlying information intact; apply genuine redactions and save the result. Keep the original and inspect the sharing copy's visible content, search results, and hidden information.

What you need
- Confirm access to Acrobat Pro and its redaction feature in your licensed environment.
- Keep the original PDF and distinguish the working copy from the sharing destination.
- List the information to remove, including repeated occurrences, images, and relevant attachments.
1. Distinguish overlays from redaction
A rectangle annotation can leave covered text available to search or copying. Use the Redact a PDF tool and inspect the applied, saved result.
Applied and saved redactions are permanent. Keep the original separate and avoid selecting content that should remain.
- Open the working PDF copy in Acrobat Pro.
- Choose All tools → Redact a PDF.
2. Mark text and image regions
Searchable text and text embedded in images need different attention. Zero search results do not establish that the same information is absent from an image.
- Choose Redact text and images, then drag over the text or image region to remove.
- For repeated terms, use Find text and redact, search for the word or phrase, and select the relevant results.
- Review pages for image text and spelling variations, and verify that the markings exclude content you need to retain.
3. Apply redactions and save a separate copy
Marking regions is not completion. Review the marked content before applying redactions and saving under a sharing filename.
- Review the marked regions and select Apply in the left pane.
- Review the dialog's option for sanitizing hidden information where needed, then choose Continue.
- In Save Sanitized Document, choose a name and location different from the original and save.
4. Review hidden information
Visible redaction and removal of metadata, comments, or hidden layers have different scopes. Use selective removal when some attached or commented information must remain.
- Open Redact a PDF → Sanitize document.
- Choose complete or selective removal. For selective removal, inspect the hidden-information list.
- Remove the selected items, save, and check any attachments or notes that should remain.
5. Reopen and verify the saved copy
Share the file saved after applying the changes. Identify its exact filename so you do not attach the original or an unfinished working copy.
- Close and reopen the saved PDF, then inspect every page for the targeted information.
- Search for the removed terms and test copying around the affected area for remaining text. Inspect image regions visually as well.
- Review document information, comments, and attachments, and verify that the necessary retained content is readable before sharing.
Limitations and requirements
- This workflow targets Acrobat Pro; do not assume that free Reader provides the same redaction capability.
- You need the original to recover information removed by saved redactions. Keep it separate from the sharing copy.
- Visually inspect image text and variations that search may miss. Apply your organization's review process for highly sensitive documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is saving a PDF with black rectangles sufficient?
Underlying text can remain. Apply actual redactions, save, and verify the targeted content through search, copying, and visual review.
Does zero search results prove everything was removed?
Search alone cannot verify image text, spelling variations, or hidden information. Review all pages and the sanitization scope as well.
