How long a home router really lasts: warranty, repair period and firmware support period are three different things
When last year's router is cheap, the number that decides the purchase is not the price gap but how much firmware support is left. Makers define a warranty period, a repair period and a firmware fix period separately, and the starting point each one counts from differs by company. This guide reads three Japanese makers' published terms, lines up what each number actually counts from, and turns that into a before-you-buy lookup. It gives no recommended replacement interval, because none of the primary sources read here states one.

- Write down the exact model number of each candidate; one product name can split into several pages by a trailing suffix
- Confirm the company behind the brand. Aterm is NEC Platforms, and Logitec products are listed under Elecom's notice, so the brand on the box is not always the company publishing the terms
- Write down the model number of the router you already own. The decision depends on both how long the new one will last and when the current one runs out
1. Three periods, and the one that matters before you buy is the third
Buffalo's support-period notice, read on 2026-09-20, sets separate terms for hardware and for software. On the hardware side it promises free repair within the warranty period set for each product, and after that period it states, in Japanese, that repair is handled in principle for three years from the end of manufacture. Sale of accessory parts is given the same three-year term from the end of manufacture.
The software side is defined separately. The page says that when a defect or a vulnerability is confirmed in a product's software or firmware, the company provides corrected software as necessary, and that the period in which corrected software can be provided is five years from the date manufacture ended, or the product's maximum maintenance years, whichever is longer. A proviso follows: for some products support may end earlier.
Maximum maintenance years is defined on the same page as the longest number of years for which the maintenance service can continue to be provided, counted from the purchase date of a product covered by maintenance. The examples given are seven years for products such as TeraStation TS6000 and AirStation WAPM-AXETR, and five years for products such as the older AirStation WAPM-1166D. Nothing on the page says that such a figure is set for an ordinary consumer Wi-Fi router, so this guide does not say so either.
The third period is the one that matters at purchase time. The warranty period is about what happens when the unit breaks and the repair period is about what happens after it breaks, but the firmware period sets the upper bound on how long a working unit can keep receiving security fixes.
2. The starting points differ by company, which breaks a naive comparison of years
Put the three sets of terms side by side and the difference in starting point is larger than the difference in years. Buffalo counts from the end of manufacture, NEC Platforms counts Aterm support from the end of sales, and Elecom counts from the end of production. The moment a product stops being manufactured and the moment it disappears from shops are not the same moment.
The Aterm support-period page, read on 2026-09-20, carries its own vintage statement: the information on the page is current as of July 2026. It states that Aterm support runs for approximately three years from the end of sales, and lists what support covers during that period: enquiries to the information centre, repair, and publication of new firmware as necessary. Its footnotes add that the end date may be brought forward depending on circumstances, and that publication of firmware may be halted depending on circumstances. The figure is a ceiling, not a promise.
Elecom's page, read the same day, states that support and repair handling for its network and NAS products runs for a maximum of five years after the end of production, with a note that support may not be possible even within that limit depending on the availability of parts and software. This is a single combined period for support and repair, not a hardware and software split like Buffalo's.
So "five years beats three years" does not follow. The years have to be matched to a starting point and to a service before they can be compared at all.

3. Actually looking up the remaining period before you buy
Reading the terms alone will not tell you how long the specific discounted box in front of you has left. The useful pages are the per-model listings.
The Aterm table shows, for each model number, either that it is within the support period or that support ended in a stated year and month. A footnote adds that roughly one year before support ends, the support-status column gains the ending year and month, with the example given as in-support until November 2026. So a model close to its end date does reveal its remaining period before purchase, while a model more than a year away shows only the bare in-support label and tells you nothing about how much is left.
The Elecom table lists a support end date, as a year and month, for each model number. On 2026-09-20 its wireless LAN router category contained entries ranging from ones that ended in March 2019 to ones scheduled for April 2030. Because future dates are published, several candidates can be compared directly on their end dates.
If you do not know which maker page to open, the IoT device maker support index published by NOTICE, a Japanese initiative run with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, NICT and ICT-ISAC, collects links to each maker's relevant page in Japanese alphabetical order. That index states that for I-O DATA, support, repair service and related software provision end progressively for products more than five years past the production end date, and that for i-PRO the support period for hardware devices is defined as seven years from the end of production.
4. What actually happens when support ends, in the maker's words and in a third party's
Buffalo states it plainly on its own page: for products whose support has ended, corrected software cannot be provided even when a problem such as a vulnerability is confirmed, and it asks the reader to consider replacing the product. The Aterm page likewise recommends moving to a current product in order to keep security assured against the vulnerabilities reported day by day.
The same conclusion is visible in a source that is not a maker. JVN, the vulnerability portal operated by JPCERT/CC and IPA, published advisory JVNVU#99392903 on 2023/08/21 covering multiple vulnerabilities in several TP-Link products. It instructs readers to update firmware to the latest version for every product except the Archer C5, and then states that according to the developer, support for the Archer C5 has already ended and there is no plan to provide an update. Within one advisory, the models still in support received fixes and the one that had left support did not.
That case concerns TP-Link products in 2023 and has nothing to do with any other company's published periods. It is used here for one point only, that a supported model receiving a fix while an out-of-support model does not is a documented outcome rather than a prediction. It is not an assessment that any particular product is dangerous.
NOTICE makes the same point in general terms: for IoT devices such as routers and network cameras whose maker support has ended, firmware intended to improve functionality or address security may no longer be provided.
5. Being able to phone support is not evidence that support continues
This is the easiest thing to misread. Buffalo's page states explicitly that enquiries about products by telephone, e-mail, chat and social media are accepted regardless of whether hardware or software support has ended. On one page, the help desk staying open and corrected software still being issued are kept as two separate facts.
In the same way, a firmware file still sitting on the download page is not evidence that further updates will come; it may simply be the last release left in place. The thing to check is how the model is labelled in the support-status listing.
After purchase there is not much to manage, but if the model offers automatic firmware updating it is worth turning on. The setting name and location differ by model, so no step sequence is given here. If you are stuck earlier than that, on an unstable link or a router page you cannot reach, settle the connection side first.
Workarounds for continuing to use a device whose support has ended are out of scope here. They fall outside the subject of reading published periods, and their premises change with the device and the network.
Limitations and requirements
- Every figure quoted here is what the maker pages said when they were read on 2026-09-20. The terms themselves can be revised, so open the relevant page again at purchase time. The Aterm page states its own vintage as current to July 2026.
- The three companies count from different starting points: end of manufacture, end of sales, end of production. Do not line the numbers up and declare one longer than another.
- Each set of terms carries a proviso to the effect that support may end early, or that handling may not be possible even within the stated limit. The published years are ceilings, not commitments to provide service for that whole span.
- The maximum-maintenance-years examples name TeraStation and AirStation business models, which are a different category from consumer Wi-Fi routers. No page read here says the same figures apply to consumer models.
- The JVN case is a 2023 advisory about TP-Link products. It is not the basis for any other company's terms; it is cited only as a documented instance of an out-of-support model receiving no fix.
- No recommended replacement interval appears in any primary source read here, and none is given in this guide.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy the discounted higher-end model from last year or the current entry-level one?
This guide does not pick a winner; it gives you the method. Look up both model numbers in the maker's support-status listing and compare whether an end date is shown and, if so, when. A listing like Elecom's that publishes future end dates lets you compare directly. A listing like Aterm's, which shows only the in-support label until about a year before the end, means the remaining period on the older model cannot be read at all, and that fact is itself part of the decision.
Where can I find the date manufacture ended?
None of the three pages read here lists a per-model end-of-manufacture date. What a reader can actually look up is usually the outcome instead: a support end date, or an in-support versus ended label. Read the counting rules as the basis for the published years, and use the per-model listing for the purchase decision.
If the latest firmware is on the download page, is the product still supported?
Not necessarily. A file remaining available is not the same as further fixes being issued. Buffalo's page also states that enquiries are accepted regardless of whether support has ended, so an open help desk is not evidence either. Check the support-status listing.
Does a device stop working when support ends?
No page read here says it stops communicating. What they say is that corrected software will no longer be provided even if a defect or vulnerability is confirmed. Both Buffalo and Aterm then ask the reader to consider moving to a newer product.
Does the same reasoning apply to a router rented from my ISP?
The Aterm page tells rental customers to contact the party they have the contract with. Equipment borrowed from a line provider may be managed under a different arrangement from the maker's published support periods, so ask the provider.
