Wireless features depend on the router, PC adapter and operating system. Identify the current bottleneck and confirm PC support before replacing the router.

These names identify wireless generations. Advertised theoretical rates are not measurements of your home connection.

Check the PC’s support
netsh wlan show drivers- Open winver with Win+R and record the Windows version.
- Run netsh wlan show drivers in a terminal to view supported radio types. This command displays information.
- 802.11be indicates Wi-Fi 7 and 802.11ax indicates Wi-Fi 6/6E capability. Also check the adapter specification for 6 GHz support.
Check 6 GHz and driver conditions
6 GHz depends on compatible equipment, regional availability and driver conditions. An 802.11ax entry alone does not guarantee that band is usable.
Identify what a replacement would address
Compare the same device near the router and, if available, over Ethernet. A problem only in a distant room differs from one affecting every connection. This is a purchasing diagnostic, not a performance guarantee.
- Compare the same task at a similar time using different positions and connections.
- If the PC lacks support, do not count unavailable features as benefits of a router-only replacement.
Verify the actual connection afterward
In Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi, open the connected network’s properties. Compare actual work times separately from the maximum rates in specifications.
Limitations and requirements
- Wi-Fi 7 products do not all offer identical features, bands or wired-port speeds. Check the exact model.
- OS support can change; managed networks also depend on the organization’s deployment policy.
