Choosing a router for a Japanese IPv6 IPoE line: why "IPv6 support" on the box is not enough
Japanese fibre providers deliver IPv4 over IPv6 through one of a small set of named methods: v6 Plus, transix, IPv6 Option, OCN Virtual Connect, Cross Path and v6 Connect. "IPv6 support" printed on a router box does not say which of those it can do. Router makers publish per-method compatibility tables instead, and those tables use three kinds of entry: supported from the initial firmware version, supported from a stated firmware version onwards, or no entry at all. This guide walks the order that actually works - find the method name in your contract, look up the candidate model in the maker's table, check the firmware condition - and covers the rented home gateway case, including the footnote in which a maker states that a retail router cannot simply be swapped in. No product recommendation and no speed measurements.

1. Why "IPv6 support" on the box decides nothing
In Japan, IPv4-over-IPv6 service is delivered by a VNE operator, with each provider's retail service riding on one of those operators' methods. Aterm's published list pairs them: Asahi Net with v6 Connect (domestic standard provisioning method), Arteria Networks with Cross Path, Internet Multifeed with transix, NTT Docomo Business with OCN Virtual Connect, JPIX with v6 Plus, and BIGLOBE with IPv6 Option.
What the reader has bought is a provider service name; which method sits underneath it is stated separately. Router compatibility tables are organised by method, so mapping your own contract onto a method name is the first step.
Both lists carry their own update dates. Buffalo's "verified Wi-Fi routers" table states a last-updated date of 2026/07/15, and Aterm's IPoE / IPv4-over-IPv6 verified list states a page last-updated date of 2026/01/22 (both observed on 20 September 2026). These lists change, so read the date alongside the entry.
Aterm also qualifies what the list means, in a note translated here from the Japanese page: this content confirms basic operation and connection behaviour in a specific environment, and does not guarantee function, performance or reliability in every environment; the compatible-device lists published on each operator's own service pages should be consulted as well.
2. The method names, and how they appear in a compatibility table
The column layouts differ between makers, but the methods are largely the same. Buffalo's table groups transix IPv4 connection (DS-Lite), v6 Plus (MAP-E) and IPv6 Option into one column, then IPoE Internet connection function with OCN Virtual Connect (dynamic IP), then Cross Path, then v6 Connect (DS-Lite method) - the column headings are in Japanese and are summarised here in English. Aterm's table uses six columns: v6 Plus, transix, IPv6 Option, OCN Virtual Connect, Cross Path, and v6 Connect (domestic standard provisioning method).
The table below lists the kinds of entry these tables use and what each one means for a purchase. The entries themselves are taken from the makers' lists.
Worked examples make the point. In Aterm's table, the Aterm WG1200HP3 is marked as supported for v6 Plus, transix and IPv6 Option, and carries no entry for OCN Virtual Connect, Cross Path or v6 Connect. The Aterm WX3600HP is supported for v6 Plus from version 1.2.0 onwards; the Aterm WG1200HS3 is supported for OCN Virtual Connect from version 1.2.1 onwards. On Buffalo's side, the WXR-5950AX12 series requires firmware Ver.3.04 or later for Cross Path and Ver.3.41 or later for v6 Connect. The same product can therefore be a yes for one method and a no for another.
Aterm's footnotes add two operational details: some firmware conditions are met by the router's own automatic update, and on some models a change made on the internet side can cause a communication drop of about one minute.

3. Establishing which method your contract uses
Aterm's list of verified operators and services maps retail service names onto methods. NTT Docomo's plala service "plala v6 express", for instance, is listed against OCN Virtual Connect, transix and v6 Connect together; Nifty's "@nifty v6 service" is listed against both v6 Plus and OCN Virtual Connect. One service name can cover more than one method.
Other entries are single-valued: Rakuten Mobile's Rakuten Hikari is listed as IPv4 over IPv6 (DS-Lite) via Cross Path, and IIJ's IIJmio Hikari with the IPoE option is listed against transix. Excite is listed with different methods for different plans - transix for several, Cross Path for another.
That is why the place to ask is the provider, not the router maker. Without the method name, there is no way to know which column of the table applies to you.
Most of these names are trademarks. Aterm's page states that v6 Plus and v6plus are registered trademarks of JPIX, transix of Internet Multifeed, OCN Virtual Connect of NTT Docomo Business, Cross Path of Arteria Networks, and v6 Connect of Asahi Net.
4. If you rent a home gateway from the line provider
Where a rented home gateway handles fibre telephony, the IPoE function may live in that unit rather than in your own router. The makers document this case directly.
Aterm's footnote 4 states, translated from the Japanese page: if the IPv6 service provided by your contracted provider is the v6 Plus service, and you are renting a router for the FLET'S Hikari Cross service from NTT East or NTT West, or a Docomo Hikari 10-gigabit-capable router from NTT Docomo, then a router obtained from a retailer cannot simply be used in place of that rented router. In that case you should tell your provider's enquiry desk that you want to use a retail router and follow the procedure they give you.
In other words, on a 10-gigabit rented setup, buying a retail router and swapping it in may not be sufficient on its own: there is a provider-side step. That condition sits outside the compatibility table entirely.
Aterm also notes that, depending on the service a given operator provides, an Aterm product may not be the device performing the IPv6 (IPoE / IPv4 over IPv6) connection at all. In those configurations, follow the provider's own setup instructions rather than the router maker's.
5. Where "a new router makes it faster" stops being true
A compatibility table answers whether the method will connect, not how fast it will run. If the contract has not been switched to IPoE, buying a compatible router does not change the method; the provider has to provision it first.
The wireless side is a separate decision. Whether to buy Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7, and whether to use a mesh set or a wired access point, are covered by other guides on this site. This one is about the WAN-side connection method only.

6. A checklist before you buy
(1) Confirm the method name used by your contract. (2) Find the intersection of your candidate model's row and that method's column in the maker's table. (3) If the entry names a firmware version, update the firmware before configuring anything. (4) If you rent a home gateway, check whether the footnote condition above applies and contact the provider if it does. (5) Look at the list's last-updated date.
Only after those five does it make sense to move on to the wireless standard (Wi-Fi 6 / 6E / 7) and placement, which other guides on this site cover. A router that does not support your contracted method cannot carry the IPoE connection however fast its radio is.
Finally, this guide uses the published lists from Buffalo and NEC Platforms (Aterm) as worked examples. If you are looking at another brand, the first thing to check is whether that maker publishes an equivalent per-method list at all - where no such list exists, the method described here cannot be applied.

Frequently asked questions
The box says "IPv6 support". Does that mean it works with IPoE?
Not by itself. Japanese IPv4-over-IPv6 service is split into named methods - v6 Plus (MAP-E), transix IPv4 connection (DS-Lite), IPv6 Option, OCN Virtual Connect, Cross Path, v6 Connect - and the makers' tables are built as one column per method. In Aterm's table, for example, the WG1200HP3 is supported for v6 Plus, transix and IPv6 Option but carries no entry for OCN Virtual Connect, Cross Path or v6 Connect. Find your contracted method first, then read that column.
The table names a firmware version such as Ver.3.04 or later. Can I use it straight out of the box?
Not necessarily - the shipped firmware may be older. Buffalo's list marks the WXR-5950AX12 series as requiring Ver.3.04 or later for Cross Path and Ver.3.41 or later for v6 Connect. Update the firmware before configuring the method. Aterm notes that on some of its models the required version arrives through the router's automatic update.
I switched to IPoE and nothing got faster. Is the router to blame?
It is one candidate, but the contract has to be provisioned for IPoE first. After that, check that your router supports the contracted method in the maker's table, and that the firmware meets any stated version condition. If you rent a home gateway, the footnote about 10-gigabit rented routers may apply, in which case there is a provider-side procedure. If the LAN side is capped at 1 Gbps, that is a separate cause - this site has a record on 2.5GbE links negotiating at 1 Gbps.
My provider's service name does not appear in the method columns.
Service names and method names are different things. Aterm's verified operator list pairs them: "@nifty v6 service" appears against both v6 Plus and OCN Virtual Connect, and "plala v6 express" against OCN Virtual Connect, transix and v6 Connect. Because one service name can cover several methods, the reliable way to find yours is to ask the provider.
