STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

Acrobat PDFs will not print, print blank, or show garbled text

What to do first

Compare another PDF and a Windows test page, then check the selected printer, document restrictions, and image printing. Keep the original file and judge the result from a small test print.

This is a general troubleshooting guide, not an announcement of a current outage.

Affected products and symptoms

Product
Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat Reader
Versions and conditions
Acrobat / Acrobat Reader on Windows 11. These steps use the desktop app, not a browser's built-in PDF print dialog.

Symptoms

  • A PDF looks readable on screen but prints blank
  • Printed text or images are missing or garbled
  • Only certain PDF files fail to print

Causes and conditions

Possible causes include the selected printer or page range, the printer itself, PDF font or image processing, and document printing restrictions. A readable on-screen page does not identify the cause.

Before you start

  • Keep the original PDF and use a copy for testing. Do not overwrite a signed document.
  • Record the Acrobat version, printer model, affected page number, and exact error.

Precautions

  • Do not use removal of document restrictions or disabling Acrobat Protected Mode as a blanket printing fix.
  • Image printing does not repair damaged PDF data. Inspect small text and technical drawings carefully.
  • Do not replace a signed or interactive original with a new PDF made by printing it.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 01

Check the printer and page range

    #

Open the PDF in Acrobat or Reader and press Ctrl+P. For paper output, select the physical printer and check that Adobe PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF is not selected.

Choose just one affected page. Review paper size, orientation, and the preview. Wait for that job's result before sending another.

    Check before continuing

You have selected the intended printer and page.

  2. 02

Compare Windows printing with another PDF

    #

Open Windows Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Select the printer, open Printer properties, and choose Print Test Page on the General tab.

If that also fails, check the printer's connection and readiness first. If it succeeds, print one page from another known PDF in Acrobat.

    Check before continuing

Record whether the failure affects all printing, all Acrobat PDFs, or only one file.

  3. 03

Use a local copy and check document restrictions

    #

Copy an email attachment or network PDF to an approved folder on the PC. If downloading it again, keep it under a different name.

Open Menu > Document Properties, or File > Properties in the older interface, and check Security. If the document restrictions say printing is not allowed, request a printable copy from its author.

    Check before continuing

You can separate the file's location from a restriction set by its author.

  4. 04

Print one page as an image

    #

For a PDF that permits printing, open Advanced in the print dialog, select Print as Image, confirm with OK, and print the same single page. This changes the data sent to the printer; it does not save over the original PDF.

Compare missing text and images with the ordinary print. Edges can look rougher with image printing. If a resolution control is available, judge readability from a test page before increasing the job size.

    Check before continuing

Improvement only with image printing points toward the normal PDF rendering or print path. It does not prove a specific cause or repair the source file.

  5. 05

Check updates if multiple PDFs still fail

    #

Save your work, then use Menu > Help > Check for updates. Reopen Acrobat after updating and compare a normal print of the same page.

If the Windows test page is also wrong, check the printer manufacturer's official driver for your model and Windows release. Ask the administrator to handle shared-printer configuration changes.

Check the result

  • Confirm that text, images, and page size print correctly while the original PDF remains intact.
  • For a longer document, inspect representative first, middle, and last pages before printing everything.
  • If only image printing works, record that condition and return to normal printing when comparing the next document.

If the problem continues

  • If only the target PDF remains affected, ask its author to export it again from the source document. Include the affected page and print result.
  • If the Windows test page fails, continue with printer diagnosis. If every PDF fails only in Acrobat, give Adobe Support the comparison results.

Frequently asked questions

Can the free Acrobat Reader print as an image?

Adobe documents this option for both Acrobat and Reader. Look under Advanced in the desktop print dialog; its position can vary by release.

Does Print as Image change the original PDF?

That print setting does not overwrite the original PDF. It changes the printing process and can affect output quality, so test one page first.
