Look up the model’s power requirement

A manufacturer may distinguish minimum charging power from recommended fast-charging power. Surface requirements, for example, vary by model; do not reuse another model’s figure.

  1. Select the exact laptop model in the manufacturer’s charging documentation.
  2. Check the candidate charger against the required USB PD and power conditions.

Read cable power and data markings separately

USB-IF requires 60 W or 240 W power markings for the USB-C-to-USB-C cables in its certification program. Data-rate markings describe a separate capability; a power label does not establish every data or display feature.

Check dock and multiport conditions

For a dock or multiport charger, check the documented output for the port and connection you will use. A total power figure alone does not establish what the laptop receives.

  1. First connect a manufacturer-compatible charger and cable directly to the laptop.
  2. Then add the intended dock or simultaneous connections and compare charging status and notifications.

Verify charging during the intended workload

Check the Windows charging indicator and any slow-charging notification during your normal workload. If the problem continues, collect the PC, charger and cable models for a compatibility check.

Limitations and requirements

  • A 65 W or 100 W label alone does not establish compatibility with every laptop.
  • Stop using damaged or abnormally hot power equipment and follow the manufacturer guidance.

Does a higher-power cable also transfer data faster?

Power capability and data rate are separate specifications. Check both for your intended use.

Can I reuse a phone’s USB-C charger?

Only when the laptop’s requirements, charger output and cable support match. Physical fit alone is insufficient.
