Single-cable USB-C monitors: match the monitor's supply wattage against your laptop's rating

Running video and charging down one USB-C cable is convenient, but whether it works is decided by the monitor's supply wattage against the laptop's rated wattage. Dell's user guide for the UltraSharp U2723QX/U2723QE/U3223QE publishes that relationship as a table: a laptop rated 45W gets a maximum charging power of 45W, 65W gets 65W, 90W gets 90W, and a 130W machine is listed as "Not supported". The same guide states that "regardless of the power requirement/actual power consumption of your laptop, or the remaining power runtime in your battery, the monitor is designed to supply power delivery of up to 90 W to your laptop". The monitor sets the ceiling, and a laptop rated above it falls outside this kind of setup. Going above 100W adds conditions: Dell's support article for the U3224KB lists three of them for 140W — the cable must go to the correct USB Type-C port on the back of the monitor, the device must support the Thunderbolt 4 protocol and have a Thunderbolt 4 port, and the cable between them must be Thunderbolt 4 rated. What you need

  • The rated wattage printed on the laptop's own AC adapter (45W, 65W, 90W, 130W and so on)
  • Whether the laptop's USB-C port supports video output and charging in, and whether it is a Thunderbolt port (from the maker's specification page)
  • The Power Delivery section of the user guide for the monitor you are considering: the supply wattage and the voltage/current combinations it lists

1. The decision is the monitor's supply against the laptop's rating

Start with what the monitor can supply. Dell's user guide for the UltraSharp U2723QX/U2723QE/U3223QE states that the monitor's USB-C port "can be used as USB-C or DisplayPort 1.4, alternatively" and "supports USB Power Delivery (PD), with profiles up to 90W". The voltage and current combinations are written out too: alongside the USB-C alternate mode entry with DP 1.4 support and a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz, the guide lists "PD 20V / 4.5A, 15V / 3A, 9V / 3A, 5V / 3A". The 90W figure comes from 20V at 4.5A.

Then the laptop. The same guide carries a table of rated power (on laptops that have USB-C with Power Delivery) against maximum charging power: 45 W gives 45 W, 65 W gives 65 W, 90 W gives 90 W, and 130 W is listed as "Not supported". A laptop whose supplied AC adapter is 130W is therefore outside this monitor's charging scope. The guide also notes that "regardless of the power requirement/actual power consumption of your laptop, or the remaining power runtime in your battery, the U2723QX/U2723QE/U3223QE monitor is designed to supply power delivery of up to 90 W to your laptop". The monitor will not stretch beyond its profile.

The same way of reading applies to other brands. There are two numbers to find — the monitor's maximum supply and the laptop's rating — and the first has to be at least the second. Where the laptop's rating is higher, you either get video and the USB hub while the battery still drains under load, or the maker states outright that the combination is unsupported.

One more thing is easy to miss: the monitor's on-screen menu has its own charging setting. The same guide describes "USB-C Charging 90W" as the item that enables or disables charging while the monitor is powered off, and separately tells you to "set USB-C Charging to On in Off Mode" when powering a Dell OptiPlex 7090/3090 Ultra from the monitor's USB-C cable. If charging seems not to work on day one, this is the first place to look.

2. Going above 100W brings extra conditions

The specification itself goes well beyond 100W. The USB-IF's explanatory page states that the USB PD Revision 3.1 specification announced in 2021 is a major update enabling up to 240W over a full featured USB Type-C cable and connector, and that before this update USB PD was limited to 100W using a 20V solution with USB Type-C cables rated at 5A. It lists new 28V, 36V and 48V fixed voltages enabling up to 140W, 180W and 240W respectively, and an adjustable voltage supply mode that lets the powered device request intermediate voltages between 15V and the charger's maximum fixed voltage. The USB Type-C specification was updated to Release 2.1 to define 240W cable requirements.

That a specification defines something is not the same as your combination delivering it. Dell's support article lists three conditions that must be met for the U3224KB monitor to supply 140 W: the cable is plugged into the correct USB Type-C style port on the back of the monitor that supports power delivery, the device supports the Thunderbolt 4 protocol and has a Thunderbolt 4 capable port, and the cable in use between the device and the monitor supports Thunderbolt 4. The article adds that because the Thunderbolt 4 upstream port can provide more than 100 W, the equipment and accessory cables connected to it should have a fire enclosure rating of V1 or higher.

The practical conclusion is simple. Delivery above 100W happens only when the monitor, the PC and the cable all meet the conditions. Reusing a cable from a drawer, or using the wrong port on the same monitor, drops the same hardware to a lower profile. "140W" on the box is a conditional maximum.

It is worth noting that the USB-IF page gives exactly this use as an example: "A monitor with a supply from the wall can power, or charge, a laptop while still displaying." The single-cable idea is what the standard intended; what limits it is always the individual product's published ceiling and conditions.

3. The other direction: a laptop sends out very little power

USB-C power flows both ways, but the two directions differ by an order of magnitude. Dell's support article states that while Dell laptops can receive plenty of power through USB-C from chargers, docks and monitors, there is a limit on what they send out: "Dell laptops supply a maximum of 5 volts (V) at 3 amps (A) through their USB-C ports. That's up to 15 watts (W) of power. This applies to all USB-C ports on the laptop, including Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 ports." The reason is given as well: a charger or dock can deliver multiple voltages (5V, 9V, 15V, 20V) and supply 60W, 90W or more than 100W, whereas the laptop's USB-C port supplies only a single fixed 5V at up to 3A.

The same article publishes a table of typical device needs: a USB-C mouse, keyboard or webcam at 2.5W–5W works directly; a USB-C flash drive or external SSD at 5W–10W works; a USB-C headset or audio interface at 5W–10W works; a USB-C hub without its own power adapter at 5W–15W "usually" works depending on the model; a portable USB-C monitor at 10W–15W "may work, depending on the model"; a USB-C external 3.5-inch hard drive at 10W–20W "likely needs its own power"; and a docking station without its own power adapter at 15W–60W+ "needs its own power adapter". A portable monitor hanging off a laptop port sits in the uncertain band.

The symptoms of insufficient power are listed too: the device does not turn on, it connects but works inconsistently and may disconnect or freeze, it works on one USB-C port but not another on the same laptop, it works when the laptop is plugged in but not on battery, or it works through a powered dock or hub but not directly. The article says these behaviours do not indicate a fault — they indicate that the device needs more than the port can provide.

Three factors change what is available. First, how many devices are connected: the first device connected gets the most power (up to 5V/3A), and adding devices to other USB-C ports makes the laptop share what it has, so the second or third may receive less current. Second, a BIOS setting called USB-C Power with two levels, 15W (default, 5V/3.0A) and 7.5W (power saving, 5V/1.5A) — if someone set it to 7.5W, devices that used to work can stop. Third, whether the laptop is plugged in: on battery it may reduce the power it sends to USB-C ports.

4. What to check before buying, and where to look afterwards

Three checks cover the purchase. First, the rated wattage printed on the laptop's AC adapter. Second, the Power Delivery section of the user guide for the monitor you are considering: the supply wattage, the voltage and current combinations, and the rated-power charging table if one exists. Third, whether the laptop's USB-C port supports both video output (DP Alt Mode) and charging in. Dell's explanatory article sets out the general terminology. It describes USB Type-C as a connector where "one cable type is all that you need for power, video, and data transfers across multiple devices, so long as the devices themselves support USB Type-C", and on Power Delivery it says the USB Type-C cable "supports up to 130W of power transmission along the same cable for compatible devices compared to 2.5W on its predecessors, USB 2.0 or USB 3.0", that some devices may have higher power capacity, and that the Dell Dock supports up to 130W over USB Type-C to supported Dell notebooks. The point for a reader is to keep track of whether a given wattage describes a dock, a monitor or a cable.

After the purchase there are fixed places to look: the "USB-C Charging" item in the monitor's on-screen menu (whether charging while the monitor is off is enabled), whether the cable is in a port that supports power delivery, and whether the cable itself supports the profile you need. Dell's user guide also recommends that when the monitor and PC are both powered off for the first time, you turn the monitor on first and then connect the USB-C cable from the PC.

Finally, decide in advance where the limit of the single-cable idea sits for you. If the monitor's supply does not reach the laptop's rating and the maker says the combination is unsupported, the product is out. Where nothing is stated, you are choosing to accept that the battery drains under load. Keeping the AC adapter attached solves it, but that abandons the reason for the single cable in the first place — a choice better made before buying than after.

  • The figures here come from Dell's user guide and support articles and the USB-IF's explanatory page as read on 2026-09-19. We did not measure charging or battery drain ourselves.
  • The rated-power charging table (45W / 65W / 90W / Not supported) describes the Dell UltraSharp U2723QX/U2723QE/U3223QE. Other models and other brands publish different wattages and conditions, so check the same entry in the guide for the product you intend to buy.
  • The statement that laptop USB-C output is limited to 5V/3A (15W) applies to Dell laptops; other makers may differ. This guide carries no prices, stock or rankings.

Frequently asked questions

If a monitor delivers 90W, will one cable cover any laptop?

No. Dell's user guide for the UltraSharp U2723QX/U2723QE/U3223QE gives the relationship as a table: a laptop rated 45 W gets 45 W, 65 W gets 65 W, 90 W gets 90 W, and 130 W is listed as "Not supported". A 130W-class laptop is outside this single-cable scope. Only under stated conditions. Dell's support article lists three requirements for 140 W on the U3224KB: the cable must be in the correct power-delivery USB Type-C port on the back of the monitor, the device must support the Thunderbolt 4 protocol and have a Thunderbolt 4 port, and the cable between the device and the monitor must support Thunderbolt 4. It adds that above 100 W the connected equipment and accessory cables should have a fire enclosure rating of V1 or higher. On the standards side the USB-IF states that PD 3.1's 28V, 36V and 48V fixed voltages enable up to 140W, 180W and 240W — but whether you get it depends on the product, the port and the cable together.

If I use the monitor as a dock, are accessories covered for power?

What the monitor passes on depends on the monitor's own specification, and it is a different question from plugging accessories into the laptop. For the laptop side Dell states that its USB-C ports supply a maximum of 5V/3A (15W), and that this applies to all USB-C ports including Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4. As guidance, a USB-C external 3.5-inch hard drive (10W–20W) likely needs its own power and a docking station without its own adapter (15W–60W+) needs one. Dell also lists three factors that reduce what is available: connecting several USB-C devices makes the laptop share power, with the first device connected getting the most; a BIOS "USB-C Power" setting of 7.5W halves the current; and on battery the laptop may reduce what it sends out.
