Choosing for your situation
Streaming suits a small SSD with a reliable connection. Evaluate mirroring when you need ordinary paths and offline access to non-Google My Drive files. Native Google editor files still need browser offline setup.
There is a difference in that Shared Drive allows you to choose streaming only, while My Drive allows you to choose both. Streaming is practical with small capacity SSDs and multiple accounts. Mirroring is a good option if you want to edit a lot of videos or use all files as a regular folder even when Drive for desktop is stopped. When switching, the file location will change, and data loss will occur unless you confirm synchronization is complete and the cloud exists before deleting the mirror folder. After full synchronization, cloud-content and independent-backup checks, Windows users must quit Drive for desktop before removing the former mirror folder.

Mark a streamed PDF, DOCX or video sample available offline, disconnect and open it in its app. Reconnect and verify synchronization. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides require the separate browser workflow.
- In Drive for desktop, open Settings (gear) → Preferences.
- Select Folders from Drive and find My Drive syncing options.
- Right-click a streamed sample PDF, DOCX or video in File Explorer and choose Offline Access → Available offline; disconnect and open it.
- Before changing to mirroring, check the total size of my drive, storage location, and local free space.
- After changing the method, wait for synchronization to complete, then check the difference with the same name, the location of the shared drive, and the reflection of offline edits.
Operational notes
In both cases, deletions and overwrites are reflected in synchronization. Check for completion before canceling, and save important data to a separate medium.
Verify the complete offline project before travel
For streaming, mark the project dependencies as available offline, including referenced images, videos and other non-Google files. Wait for synchronization, disconnect and open them in the intended app. A visible file listing alone is insufficient for editing while travelling.
Mirroring still needs enough local space. Budget separately for the My Drive copy and editing temporary files. Shared drives do not use the same mirroring option as My Drive; establish their offline arrangement independently.
Update application paths after switching modes
Switching modes can change paths between a local folder and a virtual drive. Open recent files, shortcuts and video-project media references to verify them. The presence of the new destination does not guarantee old references update automatically.
Before organizing the old folder, verify current content in the cloud and test saving and synchronization in the new location. Editing an old copy that no longer syncs creates a separate version. Decide how to retain that copy before resuming ordinary work. If removing the former mirrored folder on Windows, quit Drive for desktop after completing these checks.
Worked scenarios and decision boundaries
Streaming suits a small laptop accessing occasional subsets of a large collection. Mirroring may suit broad offline editing of non-Google My Drive files when local capacity is sufficient. Decide what must work without the internet before choosing a mode.
Video and photo workflows involve dependencies and substantial writing, not just the main project file. A virtual drive resembling a normal folder does not establish application compatibility. Trial opening, editing and saving a small complete project.
During switching, inspect path changes separately from synchronization state. A retained old mirror folder is not proof it still syncs. Verify new saves on the web and identify the authoritative location before organizing old copies. Quit Drive for desktop before removing a former mirror folder on Windows.

Run the trial and complete the transition
For a travelling video project, making only the project file offline is insufficient when referenced media is absent. Prepare dependencies, disconnect and reopen in the app to test loading and saving. If full My Drive mirroring is too large, compare project-specific offline use. Missing media after switching calls for checking new paths and project references. Continuing to edit an old mirror can create unsynchronized versions; identify the working location and assign the old copy an archival role first.
