What you need

Separate core features from paid additions
Free already includes storing logins, generating passwords and access across devices. The Premium decision concerns additional workflows rather than unlocking basic storage. The table summarizes the current official distinctions.

| Item | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Login storage and sync | Included in core features | Included in core features |
| In-vault TOTP generation | Storing a key differs from generating codes | Supports code generation |
| Encrypted attachments | Compare paid requirements | Provided as a premium feature |
| Designate emergency contacts | A premium capability | Set trusted contacts in advance |
| Sharing with a family | Check organization plans separately | Individual Premium does not expand sharing by itself |
Identify a concrete reason to upgrade
If you only need the same logins on a PC and phone, test Free autofill and sync first. Compare Premium when you specifically want in-vault codes, attachments or a prepared emergency-access arrangement.
Distinguish the integrated authenticator from the separate Bitwarden Authenticator app. Individual Premium also does not replace an organization plan for sharing. Establish the number of participants and what must be shared first.
Test on two devices before migrating everything
Start with a non-critical test login instead of migrating everything at once. Retain the existing arrangement until sign-in and recovery preparation work in the new setup.
- Install the browser extension and mobile app from official sources
- Sign in to the same account on the same server
- Create a test login and verify it reaches the other device
- Test manual use, autofill and unlocking after the vault locks
- Review the paid plan only after identifying the needed additional workflow
Prepare emergency access before it is needed
Complete the invitation, acceptance and owner-confirmation process. Agree on view versus takeover access and the waiting period with the contact. Paying for Premium does not automatically configure a contact.
Takeover grants substantial control, including replacement of the master password. Do not distribute it casually as a substitute for everyday sharing; verify the configured contact status and notification delivery.
Review annual billing and recovery preparation
Individual Premium is billed annually. Even when a monthly equivalent is shown, check the actual billing interval, currency, tax and renewal date. Consult the current official purchase screen rather than relying on a copied fixed price.
Decide whether the convenience of storing passwords and codes together fits your preferred separation of access methods. Before finishing the migration, check recovery codes and any prepared emergency contact for a situation in which the vault itself is inaccessible.
Limitations and requirements
- Do not paste real passwords or recovery codes into public forms.
- Purchasing emergency-access capability after access is lost does not replace prior setup.
