Choosing for your situation
If you want to instantly get everything on your PC and smartphone, use Bitwarden. If you want to manage storage locations, duplication, and offline operations, look no further than KeePassXC.
If you want to change sharing permissions for each item in your family, or if you want to make changes on your smartphone and immediately reflect them on your PC, consider Bitwarden's organization and synchronization features. KeePassXC is suitable for personal environments where you want to control the KDBX storage location and update procedure by yourself without requiring an Internet connection. Even if you synchronize KDBX to the cloud, you will not have the same shared management as the service type, and you will have to deal with conflicts between simultaneous editing on two machines and overwriting by old copies yourself.
First steps to try
Register one less important login and see if only the correct domain is suggested, or if you can open it on another device and a recovery copy.
- Deploy apps or extensions from each official distributor and set a long, unique master password
- Register a low-importance exam login to Bitwarden, and check synchronization with another device and display of candidates with the correct URL.
- Create a new KDBX with KeePassXC and save the same test items and key derivation settings
- Copy KDBX to another medium and check if it can be opened from the copy and if there are conflicts when editing simultaneously
- Place recovery codes and backups in a safe location separate from the main vault
Operational notes
Plaintext CSV lets the secret out. KDBX has multiple generations to avoid conflicting overwrites due to simultaneous editing.
Limitations and requirements
- Master password may not be recoverable
- Limit plaintext export
