Use your phone as a webcam, or buy one? What Windows 11 documents, and what it does not
Before buying a webcam it is worth knowing that Windows 11 has a built-in alternative: Microsoft states that "you can now use your linked Android device's camera as a webcam for PC applications", enabled by a single toggle called "Use as connected camera". The requirements are published - a PC running Windows 11 or later, an Android device running Android 10 or later, the Link to Windows app at version 1.24022.0 or later, and, for linking at all, both devices on a Wi-Fi network. What is not published is just as decision-relevant: on the pages captured on 2026-09-19 Microsoft gives no resolution, frame rate, field of view or latency figure for this path, and mentions no iPhone or iOS support. A dedicated webcam is the opposite - Logitech publishes the resolution and frame-rate pairs, the field of view, whether the focus is fixed and which port it needs. And one job is settled outright: Microsoft requires an infrared camera for Windows Hello face sign-in, so a phone cannot replace a Hello-capable webcam. This guide sets the two out side by side, with the setup steps and the documented failure modes.

1. What Windows 11 publishes about using a phone as a camera
Microsoft states the feature plainly: "You can now use your linked Android device's camera as a webcam for PC applications." It then lists the requirements as "a PC running Windows 11 or later", an "Android device running Android 10 or later" and "Link to Windows app version 1.24022.0 or later". The linking itself has its own published conditions on the companion page: a PC running Windows 11, an Android device running Android 10 or later, and "your phone and PC both need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network".
Enabling it is one toggle. Microsoft's steps are to open Settings, go to Bluetooth & devices, scroll to Mobile devices, add the device if it is not linked yet, then "select the device and toggle on Use as connected camera". The same feature appears in the Manage devices list, where Microsoft describes it as "make your mobile device's camera available as a webcam to apps". After that, Microsoft says the phone "will appear as an available camera option in Windows Settings and other camera applications", and that you change which camera an application uses "directly from the app's settings".
Linking a phone for the first time is a QR-code flow: turn on "Allow this PC to access content and capabilities from your mobile devices", select Add device, scan the QR code shown on the PC with the phone, and grant the permissions the phone asks for. The camera toggle is one item in a list of feature toggles, so enabling the camera does not oblige you to enable file access or photo notifications - the same Settings page controls each separately. Two documented behaviours explain most first-day confusion. Microsoft says a permission prompt appears on the phone because "to connect your phone's camera to your PC, we need permission to access it", and that if you do not see it, you should "check your video preview - if you see a black placeholder image with a white icon, look at your taskbar for a new window with a camera icon", or set it manually by going to the phone's Settings, finding Link to Windows in the app list and turning camera permissions on. It also notes that the image follows the phone's orientation, so if the picture does not rotate you should check whether rotation lock is on.

2. What is not published, and why that matters before buying
The pages above describe what the feature does and how to switch it on. They do not contain a single image-quality figure. On the two Microsoft pages captured on 2026-09-19 there is no resolution, no frame rate, no field of view and no latency figure for the connected camera - the words simply do not appear. That is not a criticism of the feature; it means you cannot compare it with a product specification, and anyone who tells you it is "4K because the phone is 4K" is stating something no published document supports.
The scope is also narrower than people assume. Both pages are written about Android: the camera page says "your linked Android device's camera" and lists an Android version requirement, and neither page mentions iPhone or iOS anywhere in the text captured. If you carry an iPhone, treat this route as unconfirmed on these documents rather than as available.
A dedicated webcam is the opposite case: the numbers are all published. Logitech states 1080p at 30 fps with a fixed 58-degree field of view and fixed focus for the Brio 100; 1080p at 30 fps, 78 degrees and autofocus for the C920s; 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 60 fps with a selectable 90, 78 or 65 degrees for the Brio 500; and 4K at 30 fps or 1080p at 60 fps, 8.5 MP and a Sony STARVIS sensor for the MX Brio. Whatever you think of those figures, you can compare them with each other and with what your meeting software will actually transmit.
There is also a job the phone route cannot do at all. Microsoft's Windows Hello setup page describes face sign-in as configured "with your PC's infrared camera or an external infrared camera", and its article on third-party devices states that "Enhanced sign-in security is not supported for external camera modules". 3. The practical differences the documents imply
Availability is the first one. The phone route depends on a linked phone that is charged, nearby and on the same Wi-Fi network - Microsoft lists the network condition for linking - and on that phone not being needed for something else during the call. A USB webcam is attached to the monitor and is available whether or not the phone is in the room. Neither is better in the abstract; they fail in different ways.
Mounting is the second. Microsoft documents that the image follows the phone's orientation and that rotation lock stops it rotating, which is a hint about how the feature is used in practice: the phone has to be held somewhere, at the right height, without falling over. A webcam ships with a clip designed for the top of a monitor. If you do go the phone route, the mount is the part you will actually end up buying.
Audio is the third, and it is easy to overlook. Webcam makers publish microphone specifications - Logitech states an omnidirectional microphone picking up to 1 m on the Brio 100, stereo microphones to 1 m on the C920s, to 1.22 m on the Brio 500 and dual beamforming microphones to 1.2 m on the MX Brio. The Microsoft pages describe the phone feature as a camera for apps and say nothing about routing the phone's microphone, so plan your audio separately; our separate guide on headsets and microphones covers that side.
Finally, what the meeting software does with any of this is a separate ceiling. Zoom publishes that group HD video is 720p for the active speaker and that 1080p requires an eligible plan plus activation and hardware conditions; Microsoft publishes that Teams optimizes to at most 1080p and 30 fps and drops to much lower resolutions when bandwidth is limited. 4. A decision you can make in ten minutes
Try the free route first, because it costs nothing and it answers the question with your own face, your own room and your own lighting. Check the three published requirements (Windows 11 or later, Android 10 or later, Link to Windows 1.24022.0 or later), link the phone, enable "Use as connected camera", then open the Windows Camera app or your meeting app and select the phone from the camera list. If the preview is good enough at the height you can actually mount the phone, you have saved a purchase.
Buy a webcam when one of the documented gaps matters to you: you need Windows Hello face sign-in, which Microsoft ties to an infrared camera; you need a camera that is always in place without setting up a phone; you need a published field of view because of how much of the room you want in shot; or you need the microphone specification that comes with the product. Those are decidable from documents rather than from opinion.
If the phone route misbehaves, work through Microsoft's own list before concluding anything: confirm the app version and the Android version, confirm both devices are on Wi-Fi, look for the permission prompt on the phone, and if the preview shows "a black placeholder image with a white icon", look in the taskbar for the new window with a camera icon that guides you through granting access. Permissions can also be set manually in the phone's Settings under Link to Windows. If a background is covering the image, Microsoft's answer is to disable the background in the app you are using.
One last point that applies to both routes. Windows keeps per-camera settings, and Microsoft notes that applications may apply their own settings at any time and that not every app uses the Windows defaults - so if a call looks different from the preview, the app is the place to look. Limitations and requirements
- The requirements, steps and quoted phrases are as published on the Microsoft support pages captured on 2026-09-19, and the webcam figures are from Logitech product pages captured in this sprint. Microsoft's pages change as the feature develops, and version numbers in particular are the kind of detail that moves; check the same pages before relying on them.
- The statement that Microsoft publishes no resolution, frame rate, field of view or latency for the connected camera is an observation about those two pages as captured, not a claim that the feature performs badly. Nothing here was measured by this site: no call was made, no camera was tested, and no image-quality comparison is offered.
- This guide does not cover using a phone as a webcam through third-party applications, which have their own requirements and privacy implications. It also gives no prices; whether a webcam is worth buying depends on figures you can read and on how you will mount a phone, not on a number this site could supply.

Webcam makers do publish those: Logitech states 1080p at 30 fps with a fixed 58-degree field of view and fixed focus for the Brio 100, 1080p at 30 fps with autofocus and 78 degrees for the C920s, and 4K at 30 fps or 1080p at 60 fps for the MX Brio. The practical consequence is that the phone route has to be judged by looking at it - which costs nothing, since the feature is a toggle - while a webcam can be judged from its specification before you buy. Remember too that the meeting service imposes its own ceiling: Zoom publishes 720p for group HD video and conditions for 1080p, and Microsoft publishes up to 1080p and 30 fps for Teams.
I turned the setting on but my phone never asked for permission and the preview is black.
Microsoft documents this case. It says to check the video preview: "if you see a black placeholder image with a white icon, look at your taskbar for a new window with a camera icon", and that window lists your phone name and guides you through the next steps. To set the permission by hand, go to the phone's Settings, find Link to Windows in the list of apps and make sure camera permissions are turned on; if the stream does not resume by itself, use the button in that window to refresh. Also confirm the published requirements - Android 10 or later and Link to Windows 1.24022.0 or later - and that both devices are on a Wi-Fi network, which Microsoft lists as a condition for linking. If the image is there but does not rotate when you turn the phone, check whether the phone's rotation lock is on.
