Step-by-step instructions

  1. 01

    Check quarantine history

    #

Open detection history or quarantine in your security product and check whether the game's executable was processed at the same time.

If there is a detection, record the file name, detection name and original location. Do not allow it before establishing that it is a false positive; follow the security vendor's assessment process.

Open Steam online and distinguish Steam → Settings at the top left from the game's Properties. When using multiple PCs, close the game on other devices too to avoid simultaneous syncing or updates.

  2. 02

    Restart the PC and Steam

    #

Save your work, restart the PC and launch Steam normally. Clear any temporary file lock held by an update or another process before continuing.

Record the game, Steam account, last-used device and displayed time. Before handling saves or installed files, check the developer's documented save location and copy only the necessary data to another folder.

  3. 03

    Open the game's properties

    #

In Steam Library, right-click the game or select its gear icon, then open Properties → Installed Files. Check the installation location there too.

After selecting the action, check Downloads at the bottom of Steam and the game's status. Do not exit Steam or shut down until verification, syncing or downloading completes. If an error appears, record the full message.

  4. 04

    Verify file integrity

    #

Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for completion. Avoid simultaneous drive optimization, antivirus scans or verification of multiple games.

If Steam downloads replacement files, wait for the download to finish, then launch the game.

After completion, launch the game once, check saves, playtime, video and controls, and exit normally through the game's menu. Wait for Steam Cloud to show Up to date before opening it on another device.

  5. 05

Send diagnostic details if it persists

    #

If Missing Executable continues, contact Steam Support with the unedited error screenshot, Steam System Report and details of any interfering programs you checked.

After completion, launch the game once, check saves, playtime, video and controls, and exit normally through the game's menu. Wait for Steam Cloud to show Up to date before opening it on another device.

Completion check: verification finishes and the game launches after missing files are downloaded. If not, avoid repeating the same action. If the file is quarantined after every verification, ask the security vendor to assess a possible false positive.

    Check before continuing

Expected result: if Missing Executable persists, send the original screenshot, Steam System Report and interfering-program details to Steam Support. After repair, launch once, check saves, playtime, video and controls, then exit through the game menu. Wait for Steam Cloud to show Up to date before using another device.

Check the result

  • Integrity verification completes
  • The game starts after missing files are downloaded
  • The same executable has no new detection in quarantine history

If the problem continues

  • If every verification results in quarantine again, ask the security vendor to assess a possible false positive
  • If verification cannot finish, investigate cache or storage as a separate Steam download problem

Scope of this guide

Troubleshooting guide — Restore a quarantined legitimate file only after confirming it is safe, or download missing files again through Steam's integrity verification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find the missing file online and copy it in?

Avoid doing that. Use Steam integrity verification to download it from the legitimate distribution source.

Is a message saying one file could not be verified abnormal?

Steam says it is common for local configuration files to be excluded from verification. Also judge the result by whether the game launches.
