Fix “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook” with resetnavpane
What to do first
Troubleshoot “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook” with resetnavpane by following the official decision path while preserving user data.
This is a general troubleshooting guide, not an announcement of a current outage.
Affected products and symptoms
- Product
- Classic Outlook for Windows
- Versions and conditions
- Outlook for Microsoft 365/2024/2021
- Error codes and identifiers
- Cannot start Microsoft Outlook · Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
Symptoms
- Outlook window cannot open
- The folder set cannot be opened
Causes and conditions
Separate navigation-pane settings, add-ins, and profile corruption.
Before you start
- Before changes, record and preserve PST/OST locations, default profile name, and add-in list.
- Change one item at a time and record the original symptom after each stage.
Precautions
- Do not bulk-delete unrelated settings or data.
- Exclude personal data and credentials; share only the necessary parts of PST/OST locations, default profile name, and add-in list.
Step-by-step instructions
Run outlook.exe /safe.
If it opens, isolate add-ins under File > Options > Add-ins.
If /safe opens, use File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: COM Add-ins > Go, disable all, then restore one at a time.
Close Outlook and run outlook.exe /resetnavpane.
Navigation-pane customizations are removed.
/resetnavpane resets folder-list and shortcut customization; it does not delete message bodies or server mail.
Hold Shift while starting Outlook > Options > New.
Do not delete the old profile or PST yet.
Add only one mail account to the test profile first. Adding several hides which account configuration causes failure.
If only the new profile opens, the old profile is damaged.
Use official scanpst guidance for PST corruption.
Removing the old profile deletes offline cache. Keep it until the new profile syncs and local PST files are backed up.
Check the result
- start Outlook normally twice and switch among Mail, Calendar, and folders
- Check adjacent basic functions for side effects from the change.
If the problem continues
- run Microsoft’s classic Outlook startup troubleshooter and provide its result to the administrator
- When continuing with a workaround, preserve original files or account data separately.
