Choosing for your situation
If you use splitting into two parts occasionally, it's standard. If you want to repeat fixed width on ultrawide or portrait screen, use FancyZones. There are restrictions on administrator apps, etc.
If you only have half the browser and half documents on one laptop screen, you don't need to install or reside the standard snap. FancyZones is suitable if you want to arrange the code editor, preview, and chat to a unique ratio of 20, 55, or 25% on a horizontal screen, or divide the vertical screen into top and bottom. If you have multiple monitors with different DPI magnifications, an application with administrator privileges, or a custom window frame, it may not fit as expected, so try it on the actual device.
First steps to try
After placing the three windows with Win+Z, use FancyZones to create a 3-column Grid that is wide in the center and Shift+drag. Also see the position after reconnection.
- Open Notepad, browser, or explorer and select standard 3-way split from Win+Z
- Check the snap settings in Windows [Settings] → [System] → [Multitasking]
- Enable PowerToys FancyZones and create a 3-column Grid in the layout editor
- Expand and save the center column, hold down Shift and drag each window to the zone
- Compare key behavior with Win+arrow override turned off and turned on.
Operational notes
Overwriting the Windows key will change the Win+ arrow. Disable it until you get used to it and try DPI differences and special windows.
Limitations and requirements
- Be careful with key overrides
- Some apps cannot be placed
